Jmontgo1246 Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Put in at 7:30am at old state park and headed up to big sac and sons creek. Had 3 jerkbaits and a-rig tied on. Fished several main lake and secondary points with a buddy of mine and the bass were eating the jerkbait in the morning...between the two of us we probably caught 30-40 fish with maybe 10-15 keepers...nothing big just typical keepers. After we found a small school decided to throw the a-rig at them...broke off 2 a-rigs hung up in rocks in a bout a 10 minute stretch...so put it away and just fished jerkbaits the rest of the day. Around noon decided to run to the little sac and try some areas over there with no luck. Came back to the fish we found in the morning and caught a couple more before heading home around 4:30. water ranged from 39-42 up by the twin bridges and main lake by the islands was around 45 deg. Will be back down this weekend with the family and will get out for a few hours. Jeremy Hammer time, Johnsfolly, dprice and 2 others 5
redshad Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Thanks for the report Jeremy. Busting off 2 A-Rigs in 10 minutes, ouch. What size line are you throwing them on? I usually use 50 to 65 lb braid and can straighten out the hooks and get them back.
Jmontgo1246 Posted December 30, 2016 Author Posted December 30, 2016 I was using braid...granted its been on there for a while...i think its from having some backlashes and trying to pick them out that it weakened the line in several spots. Changing out line to 20 lb flouro to see if that goes better with preventing backlashes...i think it happens when I do get snagged with braid and pulling with so much force the braid digs in deep in the spool so the next cast can be disastrous!! Or i try to throw it hard to get it way out there and now and then the braid will loop around one of the rod eyes.
redshad Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Braid does have its quirks. I use braid a lot when I lived in Texas and I guess I am use to the quirks. I use mainly flouro these days but still use braid mostly on spinning tackle and tie a short flouro leader. I seem to have a lot less problems with line loops and twist on spinning reels with braid and I think I get better hook sets with the no stretch. I have braid on 2 bait casters one for A-rig (65 lbs) on with 30 lbs for fishing heavy cover or I use it with top water or buzzbait with a momo leader. I like the braid when I have a spook out about quarter mile from the boat on a long cast.
