brittsnbirds Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 gonefishin- I didn't misunderstand. I agree with you. Whether they are fly or spin the is no excuse for rude behaviour. People need to understand that we are all Americans and we need to treat each other with respect! damselfly- I know Rainbow Fly Shop just off of 40 hiway in Independance. Wanda is the lady you are talking about. She's a sweatheart and would help anyone with a pattern. I'll be making a trip over there Saturday morning to get a few things. I remember her talking about that Renegade that she tied for the gentleman you spoke of. I'll check it out! Thanks
McManus Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Lem Hutton, who died just recently; used to help Wanda at the shop on Saturdays. Lem only fished Renegades! He took my kids from the spring to the whistle bridge one day. He showed them how to fish that fly every way possible. He was unbelievable with it! Great memories, and great people. Some of the kindest and most sharing fishermen I've met have been at Bennett and on the Niangua. "Many go fishing all their lives without knowing it is not fish they are after." Henry David Thoreau
damselfly Posted March 29, 2007 Author Posted March 29, 2007 McManus ~~~ was Lem an Orvis rep???? The man i referred to in my OP's name started with an 'L', I just can't remember his name........
brittsnbirds Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 damselfly- I stopped by and spoke with Wanda today. They moved the shop across to the North of 40 hiway in the antique mall. I asked her if her ears were burning, when I told her she was refranced she had a big smile on her face. Maybe it was her memories of Lem or just the fact that people used her info. I picked up some #8 hooks from her and she gave me the "skinny" on "Lem's" Renegade. Just got done tying some. Thanks for the reminder and I'm sure Wanda is glad people remember Lem!
Thom Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 Gone fishing: I had a simular experience at BSP when I was recovering from my knee surgury. I was trying to fly fish at the handicap access on zone because I was shakey about wading with my bum knee. People (not handicapped) would crowd into the handicap spot and try to squeeze me out. I had a cane with me for balance and asked if they minded giving me some space if they weren't handicaped. a couple of them were spin fishing with jigs and insisted throwing over my line on the float. I seldom go to BSP execpt for kids day with my grandchildren. There are some real idiots there. When they crowd up to me I usually ask them if I am in their way and then move if they don't take the hint. I don't let them ruin my day but I usually calmly tell them my thoughts on stream ettiquette before I move on. If they have kids with them I suggest that they are giving their children a poor example. Thom Harvengt
gonefishin Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 Thom: Thats for sure. Handicapped people would be well warned to stay away from handicapped access points, unless they want to use their canes and such to ward off the masses that is. Funny thing is I dont really understand what the appeal of the handicapped spots is. Sure a non-handicapped person can walk up to the easily but they are not usually located in good fishing locations. Ohhh well like the rougher element in the aluminum hatch it is just another of those things I really dont understand. I would rather be fishin'. dpenrod Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 damselfly, i don't know if lem was on orvis rep, but he was an orvis certified casting instructor. i would be willing to bet it was he you ran into. had the pleasure of taking a casting class from him shortly before he passed away. the #8 renegade was his go to fly. i have used it myself at bennett with great success.
damselfly Posted April 1, 2007 Author Posted April 1, 2007 dpenrod ~~ i'll bet your right. sure sorry to hear he passed away, i was kinda hoping i'd run into him again and share some of my stories of using 'his' fly.
jdmidwest Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 Lem passed away? He came and helped out on a flycasting course we offered 15 years ago at our Orvis shop. Great guy. I remember the renegade fly he tyed and fished. He worked out of Springview Fly Shop at Bennett. What happened to him, old age or something else? McManus Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 Lem was a geologist. Although at one point he chucked it and owned Sand Spring Restaurant for a little over a year. However, as he told the story, he realized after a year down there that his wife and daughters didn't enjoy living down there like he did. They moved back to Independence, MO.
