Water Condition

I went up to Lost Bridge area yesterday evening, in and out of numerous coves...fish were hangry and the water was a little stained and very fishable. Fishing spinners and cranks, caught 6 healthy Smallies and 2 Spots. Buddy of mine hit War Eagle, at the mill, and said water was a little stained too. Also showed me pic of 12 nice whites and one 24" striper.

I am really surprised there are whites and stripers in warm water that far south right now. I think most of the big stripers are up North now. I got a top water hit by a big striper on point 5 Sunday but it did not hook up. It hit right at the boat and knocked the wopper plopper clean into the boat.

I'm with you on the "surprised" part. Showed me more pics of a nice White stringer from yesterday evening...so I'm going out there myself this afternoon to try my luck. I will report those results.

Water looked great at War Eagle. Whatever mini White Bass run that occurred between Sunday and yesterday...is not "on" right now. 30-40 people surrounding the falls to 200 yards downstream...I only saw 5 whites caught in 3 hours this evening. Spoke to a number of guys who "tore it up" the last few days. Anyone else routinely a day late out there? 

On a side note...a few bow fishermen and one fisherwoman...were having no problem finding gar to shoot at. Sure looks fun!

Ate lunch at the Rt. 12 ramp lot. The huge debris field has moved or sunk for the most part. Water is still brown but clearing. Area between islands look ready for planting. Water still well up into the parking lot.

Sounds like big blade spinner baits and chartreuse will be popular for awhile. I wonder what that mud does to the depth fish will go?

Water was beautiful and clear up by Rambo Rd today. Paddled around for about 5 hours and fished topwater, Ned, jerkbait and my new sinking line on my 9 wt. fly rod and nothing.  Anyone do any good today?

I've always looked to the bank in muddy water for bass. I'm not sure on the open water species such as striper and whites but generally I've found that the mud brings those bass shallow and tight to cover. I wanna get out again soon, I had a buddy that had 22 pounds a week ago flipping plastics shallow so I'm anxious to see if this holds up with the muddy water.

I could see the bass moving in for the mud bugs in the newly flooded areas around brush, that brown water makes me dip the plastics in Chartreuse die on the tips anyway. I don't know how much it helps. I am not a good flipper but with all this mud you could flip with braid and not worry about the fish being line shy. That would help me anyway since I tend to flip into the trees more than the water. Looks like more rain coming this next weekend so the mud will be here for some time to come.
