Hoover - Is it possible to fly fish for the snook around there? I've caught a few snook off the beach at our family condo in Clearwater FL - I've fooled around with a fly rod off the beach but never caught anything. The few snook I've caught were on a spinning outfit with a big silver spoon.

OH YES!!! Just like up here, there are those folks down there who live and die by the fly rod. In fact I have some killer flies for snook. Bought them off a 16 year old kid after I saw his trophy snook pictures. I have personally seen folks using a fly rod to catch snook, tarpon, redfish (probably the easiest...they are freakin' gluttons), speckled trout (a drum really), ladyfish, and jack crevalles.

Except for the passes, the waters near Boca Grande are all shallow making it good for the fly rod. For more info, I would visit the Florida SPortsman Fishing Forums, they have a Fly Fishing group. http://outdoorsbest.zeroforum.com/zeroforum?id=4

Some of them even go after sharks on the fly rods....crazy stuff.

I've got one question for ya, how the heck do you get from the main land out onto the island?

Boca Grande lies at the Southern tip of Gasparilla Island. The island is about 7 miles long and not even a half mile wide....more like 400 yards. There is a swing bridge at the northern end ($4.00 toll) and you can drive your car. On the island most people get around via golf cart. Its fun, but expensive on the Island....I tend to shop off the Island.

Sounds like a good time. My boss has a house in Sarasota and has invited me down. Thinking about giving it a whirl! Thanks for all your info!

Hoover25, I'm heading down to the Pensacola area next month and have been chatting with some guys on http://www.fishpensacolabeachpier.com/prices.htm.

I was just wanting to get some more in detail information of how you caught your fish off the pier? I've had so many different ways told to me that I don't know which way to go?? Did you just cast out or did you have somebody with a kayak take your bait out for you? What line did you use up to your leader and what size leader did you use? From what they tell me they are doing real well on black tips, bulls, and mako sharks right now. Along with pomps, cobia, sheepies, and spanish macks. I'm taking my own gear along both for big fish and the smaller fish. They are doing a lot of jigging Got-Cha lures down there now. I'm wanting to get into some live bait as well as fresh cut bait action at night like you did. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Coming from a Kansas boy here, I haven't a clue what I'm about to get into! Thanks
