Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 13, 2007 Root Admin Posted April 13, 2007 Well, fishin's been good on the upper lake. Don't think anyone is complaining. Whether fishing off the dock or out in a boat, almost everyone is catching their limit of rainbows. Bait fishing is king. Power Bait (Gulp) is killing them. Doesn't seem like color makes a difference. I always tell people to use a white and another color on one hook. The water is pretty clear so 4 lb line or less is a must. I boated up past Fall Creek to check out a report. Threw a jig. 3/32 oz to an 1/8th oz, 4 lb flourocarbon, throwing straight- no float. Worked a orange-head/sculpin but they were orange shy. Put on an olive/sculpin and did better but they were biting light. Water started moving a little so I put on a white jig and more short bites... come cast I had 4-5 bites but no hookups. That's just the way it goes sometimes.
troutchaser Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 I hate it when they strike short. It makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong. Paul Rone
Members jim schulte Posted April 13, 2007 Members Posted April 13, 2007 Phil, Coming down next week to stay at your place. Have a question regarding power bait. Does it go bad over time or lose it effectiveness? Had a fishermen tell us it needs to be less than 1 year old for best use. Is this true or just Taneycomo windage? By the way, enjoy the forum, first time to write.
Leonard Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 Jim.. Im not Phil... but this may be able to answer your question... As I read your post I remember I have a jar (of eggs) in the closet so I checked... To let you know it still smells like the trout food they feed the trout at the hatchery... How old is it... well it is one of those large jars they stop making sometime ago..I dont think Ive have bought power bait in maybe 6-7 years... If that says anything.. Also this has always been inside the house.. not outside in a garage or in the back of the car.. so maybe it the way That I have keeped it stored... Leonard http://www.taneycomonights.com
Members skybroom Posted April 13, 2007 Members Posted April 13, 2007 I've used power bait that was at least 3 years old. Works the same to me.
WebFreeman Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 Same here. I haven't used Gulp, though, but I have some pb that's probably more than 5 years old in my garage and it's still "flavorful" (ie stanky!) “Many go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” — Henry David Thoreau Visit my web site @ webfreeman.com for information on freelance web design.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 13, 2007 Author Root Admin Posted April 13, 2007 As long as it doesn't dry up it should be good.
taxidermist Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 My Dad introduced me to Power Bait a couple years ago. He is one of those people who date everything. His power bait must be some of the oldest remaining in the big jar and it still works. I used the last of a big jar a few weeks back. I did try new verses old and maybe just maybe the old stuff was a bit better. I feed my fish in the pond and Power Bait don't smell like the fish food pellets from Purina or Tindles. I dont know that Power Bait will dry out, it takes several weeks before its not usable, I have left it laying out just to see. John
