SilverMallard Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 The ones who really get my goat...and make me laugh later...are the duck hunters who back their boats down the launch into the water in the pre-dawn launch hour without putting the plug in and/or removing the tie-downs. Now you want to see some hopping mad duck hunters, that's the time! It makes everyone behind them late, which can ruin a duck hunt. But it is monumentally embarassing to the guys who do it. So it's a time of annoyance AND humor. I've seen this happen several times. Once, in southern Arkansas on a 3-wide boat ramp in an NWR, my buddy and I watched 2 rigs back down the ramp side-by-side and BOTH sunk their boats in this manner at the end of the launch with about 10 other rigs behind them waiting to launch. That was NOT a good morning! But by Noon, it sure was hilarious. Al Agnew Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Top three places to sit in a lawn chair, drink beer, and be entertained... 1. Maramec Spring, opening day of trout season. (Well, it may be a bit cold for the beer...maybe a thermos full of something hot and alcoholic instead) 2. Any popular boat ramp on any big lake in Missouri on a Saturday afternoon. 3. Any fast riffle with a nice sweeper on the Current or Meramec on a sunny Saturday in June.
RiverRunner Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Over here in NE Arkansas, the favored boat ramp technique of many is to whip in off of the highway and drive past the anglers getting their boats ready in the parking lot and drive directly to the ramp (usually one-lane, if more than one-lane, try to block both of them). Once on the ramp, its time to start installing the motor, trolling motor, depthfinders (make sure to turn on all of the fish alarms!) and to get all rods rigged up. This is also the time to get minnows on all the hooks and to get rods layed out just like you want them. Now its time to launch the boat while trying to avoid getting the tires of boat trailer or vehicle wet. Once off of the trailer, be sure to pull the boat up on the ramp instead of on the bank next to the ramp or over on the courtesy dock if one is available. No sense allowing any other anglers a chance to get on the water, its all about me you know! After securing the vehicle (by taking up three parking spaces) its time to go fishing. At the end of the day, after putting the boat on the trailer (again by not getting any trailer or vehicle tires wet) just pull the boat up the ramp a few feet and methodically load up all of your gear. If anybody comes around to help or tell you to get a move on, just tell them to kiss your A!@ and get away, its a public ramp and you can spend as much time on it as you want!!! I've seen this scene so many times (esp in the spring when crappie fishing is hot) that its not even funny anymore. I've always thought that boat ramp etiqutte should be posted at the ramp.
Quillback Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 I hear ya RiverRunner, the absolute worst are people that back their boat down the ramp (blocking everyone else) then start getting their gear ready before they launch.
taxidermist Posted April 19, 2007 Author Posted April 19, 2007 3. If you start flashing lights or tailgating or using sign language, you might be stuck there for quite some time. This is the INTERNATIONAL signal to pass. Even in most states it says to either flash your headlights or honk your horn. Some states its the law to let the slower vehicle know a faster vehicle is approaching. Bottom line is this the left lane is for passing not strolling down the highway.. Back to the boat ramp situation, the man called me today raising 9 kinds of cat crap. He thinks its unfair of me to charge him a storage fee on his fish. He wants to just come and pick it up. Now the fact he signed a contract and initialed the line that says, storage fees will be charged un specimens held by me without deposit as per line 2. line 2. says that the person leaving the specimen must pay the deposit within 30 days. Which he also initialed. His excuse for not paying the depsoit is he don't have the money. I reminded him that his pickup cost way more than mine and his Triton boat and monster motor could use enough fuel that two trips fishing would have paid for the fish mount. He cussed me out a bit, but thats normal with people such as he who skip out on paying their bills. Funny had he paid the deposit he would have had the fish back within 45 days. As the world turns so do the days I need to go fishing. John
