am4mu
Can anyone help steer me to a beginners fly tying class in the Kansas City area. Thanks, Doug Doug Kiefer Independence, Mo h: am4mu@comcast.net w: dougk@schulzetool.com
MrsDucky
Since I'm not from there, I really can't, but I can tell you that around here, anyone who sells fly tying stuff usually will teach it. Check out local shops, and even if they don't have official classes, usually they will help if they aren't busy. Next time I'm up that way, I'll do a little checking of my own. I can bring home the trout...fry it up in a pan...and never let you forget I caught it! 'Cause I'm a woman!
trout fanatic
This might be old hat to you but i thought i would throw it out anyway. First check out the flytying links on flyanglersonline.com. They run from beginner through advanced and are very informative. Second check out the fly tying bench on kmos every sunday at 6:30 pm. Mark van Patton is the host and sometimes he gives info good for beginners. In any event it is a good program with lots of good patterns
DeepDiver75
I live in Olathe and can recommend the fly tying classes held out at Cabela's by their flyshop. They have beginner and intermediate lessons for a minimal price. I also know that K&K Flyfisher in Overland Park gives tying lessons. I think you get a little more in depth in this class and it costs a little more but they are good people. This is where I purchase the majority of my tying supplies here locally. If you need any more info just holler I'd be glad to help out.
Randall
okay, its sacreligious, but bps does free tying lessons in st. charles, they may do the same elsewhere. that said, i advocate and do avoid buying from white river fly shop like the plague because i'd rather support proshops. its the proshops where you'll find those that are truly passionate about the sport and want to see it grow, not to mention the help is on a whole different level. if you're ever in the branson area, the class at lilley's landing on tuesday nights is wonderful and free. i plan my trips so that i will be able to go. For anything past the most basic tying skills, and all your other fly fishing and tying needs, get it from a proshop rather than a chain outfitter. Cute animals taste better. Dave Cook
Doug, I belong to two fly fishing clubs in KC. All the FF clubs do fly tying. Arrowhead FF meets in Independence and MTFA meets at Fleming Park. Give me a call at 816-272-5194 or email me if you are interested. am4mu
Thanks to all. I am looking at all possibilities. Rainbow fly shop has classes here in Independence and yes Jeremy Hunt has a great class at Lilley's. I went to his class when I was at Lilley's several weeks ago and this is what motivated me to start tying. Dale thanks for your reply. I will try to call you this weekend.
