Hello. My name is Frank. I am from Miami, Florida. I am planning to buy the new 25 Hp jet outboard to be installed in my new 12' triumph. I have questions about this engine, and ... not even the distributors in the area nor my "experts friends" had being able to help me with this. You are my first and only hope so far. My new little boat is very shallow (only 4" draft). I do a lot of flat fishing. Ideally, I'd like to get fast to the fishing spot ( I got the filling that this is gone be OK); buy I also troll a lot. My concerns are:

-Do this jet delivers enough directional control in the boat at low speed?

-In case of obstruction in the jet to be undo: is it very dificulty?.

-The most important answer for me is if it is possible to troll fishing at low RPMs without making too much of a turbulence in the water while propulsing.

I will appreciate any comments.

Thanks a lot.

Frank.

Frank,

The only difference between a jet and a prop is response time. Without the lower unit below the boat to act as a rudder a jet is a little slower. I use my 90/65 E-Tec to troll and have no problems.

As for removing any obstruction generally simply triming the motor and using your hand to clean the grate will do. On the occanion you suck something into the impeller and it becomes lodged it is a simple matter of removing 8 bolts from the jet boot pulling the boot off and removing whatever is stuck. The last thing is I don't think you will have to worry about creating to much turbulance. You may notice a little at the point ou turn around but within a few yards that should be settled.

Good luck on getting set up

can anyone provide a manufacturer of an aluminum john boat with a transom high enough to mount the 25 Merc 4 stroke Jet Drive?

Don't know where you live.Another source would be Perry's Marine in Bourbon Mo.He sells Southfork jet jons made in Ark. Very similar to Alweld.

The only good line is a tight line

Thank you all for your responses. I bought this motor direct from Merc Marine in Wisconsin on Gov't contract. I work for the USGS, Water Resource Division in South Carolina. Just wanted to let you all know that the price they sell to the Gov't is $2,895......my office paid $3,100 for it delivered to SC.

Just thought I'd give you all a heads up on what the manufacturer cost of this motor is..it may help you in negotiations with your dealer.

I enjoy your forum..a wealth of knowledge....if I'm ever in Arkansas.......

I had the Transom on my 14ft. jon modified by a Metal Fab shop! They made a saddle transom that slid over the org. It works well! The main thing to know the boat can not have a Rib on bottom in front of the pick up foot so no center keel! If I was starting fresh I would go with a Jet Tunnel! They are different than just reg tunnel drives ...So make sure it is a Jet tunnel! This would help protect the pickup foot! I had the info. as to where to get them made but can not find it now...search the Web and call boat manufactures...They will work with customer and build special boats custom design...Just make sure you research and know what you want when you call..I am looking @ having a 15'X52" Jet tunnel made when $$$ become availible.

The best two in my opinion would be Blazer or Weld-Craft, both have been proven time and time again on Current River. Supposedly South Fork and a few others make some pretty decent jet boats as well.

I may be a little late on this topic but I just discoverd it . I have a 16/48 Blazer with50 hp jet and wouldent trade it for anything. the olny thing is pluging up mine has power trim and it takes a little time to rais and lower but easy to do. The other guys I run with dont have the power trim just pick the moter up and drop it and It usually slings the junk out . they will be gone before I get mine raised out of the water.
