I admit to once having the "only good snake is a dead snake" syndrome. And when I first see on under my feet, I still am prone to a heart attack. But, I agree with you, Ham and MTM. They have their place. I no longer kill snakes unless they are copperheads, cottonmouths, or rattlers and only then if they are in MY territory or give me one of those heart attacks... Send me to jail, but if I find a copperhead on my patio, he is in eminent danger...

Same with black widder (widow) and brown recluse spiders, rabid skunks, and armadillos... OH... and purple dinosaurs....

post-234-1179877729_thumb.jpgHey Terry, what would you do if you found this monster on your patio,or better yet how would do it in? A 10 gauge maybe.

This snake, a Rattler was found in S.E.Missouri,9 feet 1 inch long and weighed 97 lbs.Don't know any details on how it was killed.I am against killing any kind of snake also, but what would you do if this thing was lurking around your back yard?

It always amazes me that people always fall on one side of the arguement or the other.

It is always either "I hate snakes" or "I love snakes", "Kill em all" or "never kill a snake". Snakes are very much a part of our environment, and are important to the natural balance of things. But all things in nature get killed. It is survival of the fittest, and I am bigger than the snakes. Even that 9 footer that weighed 97Lbs (that guy was holding it waist high, that is only about 3 feet for me, so I would say more like 5 to 6 ft)

I don't kill snakes routinely, even poisonous ones. I do not however hesitate to kill one that has decided to take up residence near where my children play. This is my home, not theirs. If this snake were poisonous, I would probably have opted to kill it since it obviously was taking up residence very near people. Repeated contact with people will eventually lead to a bite incident.

As for snakes being evil, Satan chose the form of a snake.

Of course, satan probably took the form of a purple dinosaur too. What do you think Terry?

Jorob, thats exactly what I was getting at,if I seen that snake in my back yard I would have to put an end to its life, better him than me or my kids or my dogs. But at the same time I have several Garder snakes that make my garden their home,I won't bother them.

As for the picture,my daughter sent that to me in an e-mail,because shes always telling me how I am gonna get bit running around out in the woods Turkey hunting. And I always tell her there aren't any real big snakes in Missouri to worry about. Now I am not so sure.

It looks to me like he is holding that snake head high,so if he is 5 ft 5 or 6,that thing could be 9 ft.Don't know for sure, just thought it would make a good conversation picture.

Really, the only snake I have ever come across that was aggressive was our native Cotton Mouth.

Take your choice from the "short list" Tightline... You can bet if he was in my back yard, he would get something from one of these unless the killer Yorkies took care of him first...

I would not routinely kill any snake in the wild, unless he was venemous, striking at me, and aggresive. OR... I was lost and stranded for a couple of days without food.... mmmmmmmmmmmmmm (ala Les Stroud and Bear Gryles...)

To answer Danoinark - yes they are protected in Missouri. The Missouri wildlife code is called a "permissive" code, meaning if it doesn't explicitly state you can kill something, then you can't. I don't know how far down the food chain you can take that logic (there is no open season on skeeters, but you won't get ticket for swatting one).

That said, I would kill a poisonous if it in my yard, in the wild, I'd give it a wide berth and leave it alone.
