gonefishin Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I don't hunt snakes to kill them but, if they decide to take up residence in my territory they move right to the top of the endangered list. There are some who say wasps should not be killed either but, I keep a can of wasp killer around for when they take up residence above my doorway. I would rather be fishin'. Wayne SW/MO Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 It amazes me that people are afraid of snakes. They give me a start if they surprise me, but if you travel much outdoors you should know where they tend to be and avoid it. Snakes are well down the list of dangerous outdoor hazards. Black Widows are pretty docile and I'd take a hundred of them over one Fiddleback. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
MrDucky Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 Snakes + Big horn = Mr Ducky oh and i run fast from both Yikes!!! I Hate that warning horn
MrsDucky Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 Personally, I don't feel I'm love 'em or hate 'em. I respect them. That being said, if they leave me alone, I'll leave them alone! I think Mr. Ducky will find a rubber snake around the house...let's call it an exercise starter! He was just proud of me on Saturday. I do have a thing about spiders, crabs, and ticks...they just don't move naturally IMHO. So, when I pulled a daddy long legs out of some one else's hair and didn't freak, and some one pulled one out of my hair and I didn't freak, he said he was proud of me! Of course, he doesn't know I used to be one of those evil children who pulled the legs off of them, and squished the body. OOPS! I can bring home the trout...fry it up in a pan...and never let you forget I caught it! 'Cause I'm a woman!
Terry Beeson Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 ...he doesn't know I used to be one of those evil children who pulled the legs off of them, and squished the body. I KNEW you were EVIL!!!!.... You said it, Mrs Ducky... RESPECT is the key. No real "fear" or hatred... OR love for them.... just respect. But mostly I respect their right to stay away from me... gonefishin Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 To answer Danoinark - yes they are protected in Missouri. The Missouri wildlife code is called a "permissive" code, meaning if it doesn't explicitly state you can kill something, then you can't. I don't know how far down the food chain you can take that logic (there is no open season on skeeters, but you won't get ticket for swatting one). That said, I would kill a poisonous if it in my yard, in the wild, I'd give it a wide berth and leave it alone. I dont think that is the spirit of the code. The code means you aren't supposed to pursue an unlisted animal for the sole intent of killing it. My opinion tho is hang the code. If a Snake, Scorpion, Wasp or any other stinging, venomous or biting creature enters my personal space it is either ran off or dead. If it is out in the woods not bothering me then I won't bother it. I would rather be fishin'. "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." Benjamin Franklin, 1759
