Chief Grey Bear Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 What would happen if someone drove off with the same dollar amount in pop, beer, candy and other stuff that could be purchased in the stores? Did you see on the news here a while back those kids that stole a loaded donut truck? No kidding it really happend! They had every law enforcement officer chasing this truck. I think they got the electric chair. SilverMallard Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 Cops have to eat and drink too. They also need to go to the bathroom just like other workers. There is nothing implicitly wrong with 4 cop cars @ an IHOP. There's nothing wrong with 4 cop cars almost ALWAYS being at the IHOP. Now, if it's the same 4 cars and the same cops all the time, that might be a problem. But cops usually do get a dinner break, and they tend to take them at the same places. Danoinark Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 Running a plate will not give you someone's driving record. It will show who is the registered owner of the vehicle. Well, I should say who owns the plate. That is why I asked for a description of the car also. I can't access this info myself, but I do have some "connections"( Chief I understand what you are wanting to do, but the problem comes when the prosecuting attorney asks Ducky where he got the license info. And if they wanted to pursue it..then all they do is run a recap of that license plate and see what agency and officer ran it. They could track that info down and even prosecute the officer. I wouldn't step into that situation. It's easier for ducky to take the plate number to the prosecutor. It has nothing to do with the driving record. Its the running of ANYTHING without jurisidiction and authorization that will get you in trouble. I wouldn't go there. Dan Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"

crappiefisherman Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 you dont suppose the police sitting at Ihop might be strapped by the high price of fuel in their town and are ordered to centralize in the community, to wait for calls. They do lots more then give speeding tickets folks. Also next time you drive through a highway workzone, and see men standing , dont assume they are getting rich on your dime. They are hard working individuals that have certain tasks givin them to get done in a ready fashion.Youve heard hurry up and wait, sometimes that also plays in the hand. Rusty Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 This should give a good idea who the laws are really written for. I would be curious to know if the DA/City Judge for that city/county is the one who asked for this dollar amount, or if it was the local law enforcement. Are the defendants attorney's in that county better than the prosecuters? I called someone who could give a answer regarding out towns policy and they said it didn't matter if it was .01 they stole. They would do a report no matter how small. How many have inadvertently driven off after getting fuel and not pay for it? I have a couple of times. Both times, luckily, it was at stores I do business with a lot. I remembered at one and turned around, the other one I had a message on the answering machine when I got home. It's a good thing to be friends with the people that work at stores. It can sure save you a headache in the long run.
tippet7 Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 I cant understand something. If you file a police report, give them the plate #, they may not actively go after the guy, but they should at least run the plate, which that information would be in the report, which you can get a copy of due to the Freedom of Information act. Anyone should be able to go to their police department and ask to see the latest police reports. Some reports they will not give out like rape, child abuse, things like that, but I dont think that a gas drive off falls into that catagory. You are so stupid you threw a rock at the ground and missed.

Prosecution is unlikely for said officer, but a reprimand for a first offense or a firing if there are other issues as well ARE likely outcomes. The reprimand could come with forfeiture of pay, demotion, etc. Not something I want to happen to someone who did me a favor. gonefishin Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 In Ducky's defense, a LOT of stores have this policy of making clerks cover drive-offs and bad checks they take at a register. I don't believe it is even legal, but a lot of them do it...and get by with it. Some restaurants charge the server for walk-offs as well. It is a horribly unethical business practice in my opinion. I have stopped patronizing businesses over this practice in the past when I found out they did this to an employee. I have to agree with SilverMallard on this one. That is a horribly unethical business practice. In fact I am reasonably sure when it comes right down to it this practice is illegal. I would rather be fishin'.
