The're not alligator gar they are longnose gar. Can't hardly catch them with a hook. You can use frayed rope jigs with out hooks to catch them sometimes, gets caught in their teeth. You can google how to catch them I know there are a few websites to show you how.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

Get a light action spinning rod and rig up with a long shank crappie hook with a minnow. Find where a school of gar are rising and toss out the minnow and just let it free spool around. You shouldn't have to wait long and one will latch onto it.

More than likely what will happen is that you fight it for a bit and they either slice the line with their teeth or the hook pops out, but you do land a few. They put up a heck of a fight on light tackle.

I have not noticed gar being particularly line or hook shy. I have hooked a lot of them using a bass rig. To set up use as long of a hook as you can find, one of those small, long shanked bream hooks will work, put on a minnow and a split shot about 3 inches above the hook then a bobber about a foot above that. Cast out in the middle of them. Good luck

I would rather be fishin'.

Any recomendation for getting that sucker off the line? Is it similar to what you would do with a Northern? Is it okay to use a steel leader?

Cut the line. I wouldn't get my hand near the teeth one of them things have.

Never tried a steel leader so I couldn't tell you.

I just grab them a little behind the head since they aren't usually very thick and use pliers to pop the hook out. Unless they swallow the hook, it's not hard to unhook them. They have some pretty rough scales on them too so they are easy to hold onto.

I guess a guy could get by with that on small ones but I have caught some good sized ones that a person could not get their hand around. As you mentioned the scales are rough. On the bigger ones the scales can scuff a person up a bit.

Those critters have some rough skin. Best way to get them out of it is to use wire cutters or tin snips.
