Leonard Leonard: What is "blind grabbing"? Thanks for the report. I still need to give you a call about where the big gills roam in taney. Bud I would rather be fishin'. Wayne SW/MO Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Thats were you grab fish and hope they're Suckers. Some do it when the Whites are running, and then throw the Whites back bleeding, to die most likely. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
gonefishin Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 That dont sound good. I take it then they are gigging but arent able to identify the fish before gigging it? I thought maybey they were snagging them or something. Bud I would rather be fishin'. "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Leonard Posted January 18, 2006 Author Posted January 18, 2006 Blind Grabbing is.. A big 2 prong hook with weight added to the shank to keep the prongs upward (off the bottom).. some likes to use 20-30lbs line... You throw into the water and let it settle to the bottom... wait (a slow5- 10 count works good).. and with every thing you got set the hook hard... and then repeat.. after 2 or 3 throw.. move up or down about 10-15 feet along the bank.. and do it again.. Most off the time this is really good method when you know the suckers are there.. But the chances of grabbing a trout, bass and another type of fish is very high risk.. http://www.taneycomonights.com
Wayne SW/MO Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Bud grabbing is snagging. Normally its done in clear water, around here Roark, Bull and Swan are popular, maybe others, and most do it in such a way that Suckers are the only target. Occasionally someone doesn't care and they snag other fish. I saw a guy last year on Swan targeting Whites, and he did a number on them. Blind Grabbing is another way to snag a lot of illegal fish to get some legals. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
gonefishin Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 I guess for some reason I associated grabbing with gigging. I know when grabbing/snagging, no different than any other fishig, an illegal fish is going to be caught once in a while, However a person should not purposly target them. I snagged for spoonbill with my uncle for years, we caught hundreds of spoonbills over the years but I can't remember us ever catching an illegal fish. I heard of it once in a while but it never happened to us. Thanks for the reply. I would rather be fishin'. "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted January 19, 2006 Root Admin Posted January 19, 2006 I wrote Glenn Scott today. He's the guy in charge of the Nixa Sucker Days. I talked to him on the phone and he's excited that there's a forum where all of their sucker grabbin' guys can go and talk about grabbin'. I hope it will generate alot of traffic. I may have to go to Sucker Days this year- sounds like alot of fun.
Members bryantsmallie28 Posted January 31, 2006 Members Posted January 31, 2006 OK just to save some person, who decides blind grabbing for 8 white suckers in an hour sounds fun, however much money the fine is, The fall grabbing seasons ends tomorrow January 31. (which you couldn't pay me enough to go do, yellows maybe, well nevermind not them either I still have better things to do) So before someone decides to go out and do this its not legal after tomorrow. Also yeah there might be a few suckers at the mouth of roark. I figure there would be suckers up in roark if there was enough water. There are suckers in most creeks all winter long, how else would there be fish for people to gig. The spring grabbing season opens March 15 and closes May 15. So everyone will have to wait until then, unless they want to risk it. And to clear things up blind grabbing is usually done when its windy or muddy and the suckers are pretty thick in a hole when the odds are pretty good that you will hit a fish every few casts, or when you are bored haha. Grabbing in my definition is done when it is clear enough you can see the fish. I have seen times when you could see the fish but the school was so thick that unintentionally you would hit something else. I remember back when the lake so low a couple years ago that you could stand on those little bluff at the maiden hole and the bottom was just black with fish and a majority of them were suckers or carp and buffalo but there were white bass in the midst of them and you woudl grab a white every once in a while and just had to throw it back. those kind of days make for some bad confrontations between the grabbers and white bass fishers. Another place that can get bad with that is up swan along the road. Well sorry that was so long but i thought id explain everything, and i really didnt want anyone to go out not knowing that there is a season and get fined. oh yeah, and sorry if i sounded sarcastic or something, but I just really didnt understand spending that longof time blind grabbing for that little number of fish which are harder to clean and not quite as worthy of the trouble it was to get them.
