jcoberley Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 I would like to know where is the best place's to catch crawfish and if anyone would share how to build traps for them and where to place them? I have been told to use cheap canned dog food. Fish slow and easy! Borrowed this one from..........Well you know who! A proud memer of P.E.T.A (People Eating Tasty Animals)
WebFreeman Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 There was a good article last summer I think in the Missouri Conservationist. They have archives on their web site. “Many go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” — Henry David Thoreau Visit my web site @ webfreeman.com for information on freelance web design.
gonefishin Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 There are some crawdads in TR that I swear are the size of small lobsters. Not sure how to go about catching them but I bet they would be fine eating once a person did. I would rather be fishin'. "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." Benjamin Franklin, 1759
Dutch Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 We used to catch them an night in the creeks by hand using just flash lights. If you decide on a trap, be sure to look up the rules because they used to be pretty specific. A good bait for them is bacon.
Terry Beeson Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 Second the motion on bacon. You can make a trap by taking a two liter "pop" bottle, cutting the top off about 3-4 inches down, inverting it making a funnel to the inside of the bottle, then gluing that in place. http://www.boyslife.org/hobbies-projects/p...comment-page-4/ That's a similar version... gonefishin Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Look like a regular monnow/crawdad trap so they should be legal. I would rather be fishin'. "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." Benjamin Franklin, 1759
jcoberley Posted June 5, 2007 Author Posted June 5, 2007 It says its collapsible that would be cool for transporting and storage. Wayne SW/MO Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 You can often buy them at Walmart or BPS. I like Walmarts cat food, the big cheap cans which put out a lot scent. The best way to catch them is to put the traps out on rocky banks in 2-3' of water. Take a cooler that has a good supply of ice in it when you run the traps in the morning and put the 'dads on ice immediately. They are great when caught fresh and cooked quickly. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Mikey Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 I took my kids down to the local creek with some powerbait maggots to try and catch some perch. Well, as soon as the maggot hit the surface my rod started bouncing I reeled it up a little ways (bear in mind we are 12 feet from the water's surface on a bridge) and look down to see a huge 'dad on it. He flopped off but from then on all I was fishin for was craws. We caught about 15 there in a span of 20 minutes. I'd reel them in and toss them on the ground and let him pick them up and put them in the bucket. Still almost the most fun he and I have had. I guess it just reminds me of those games at wal-mart with the crane and stuffed toys... Mikey Each time I buy a new fly............ My wife gives me the same look........ I give her when she buys another purse... ..............................
