Vanish for tippet material

Mike Scott told me he used vanish line made by Berkley for his leader and tippet material.

He uses 6-4-2 lb only, building his leader from the 6 and 4 and uses the 2 lb as tippet. The 2 lb is .005 diameter which is the same as 5x Rio. And he told me he caught tons of trout this weekend on it using zebras and scuds.

I thought... 5x! And I've been using 7x just to get bit more!!

So I tried it this morning (see fishing report under Taneycomo 11-14) and I had no problem fooling fish- no problem at all!! I'm going to have to keep experiment with this- I've used it on spin cast rigs but I like mono better because of the stretch and feel it gives me. I use flourocarbon tippet... but this is bending my idea of tippet diameter and what I have to use to get bit.

Any ideas?!

MMMmmm Vanish eh?? It's hard to argue with success Phill. Keep 'sperimenting with it though..

If the diameter is the same as 5X rio, why give up the extra 2lbs of strength? The rio is 4lb test. I'm not really familiar with the vanish product (assuming by the name it is florocarbon or something like it). If it works better, I'll try anything once.

It is much stronger than any 2 lb line I've tried... stronger than most 4 lb lines. I guess you need to try it for your self to see what we're talking about.

I had left my tippet in our wader bag and happened to have some vanish 2 lb buried in my vest from our Sierra Days last fall. It worked great and I have kept using it.

I kinda had the same thoughts as Brian Sloss. Why give up the breaking strain.

The the first generation fluorocarbons were generally weaker than mono of the same diameter. The principle being you could use a heavier diameter/same breaking strain as mono and still get a better result.

Then came the super fluoros with a fancy coating which made the original stuff stronger than mono per X rating diameter, and better yet knot better. The Rio/Umpqua super fluoro at 5x breaks about 5/4.9 lbs. Some don't like how supple these are but I wouldn't use anything else for tippet.

Still have to be careful with your knots I use the Eugene Bend only as fly to tippet, 3 turn sugeon's as mono leader to tippet

Of course its $13-$14 bucks a spool. Vanish P-Line and the other conventional tackle fluoros are way way cheaper, Ive used extensively on salt, king salmon, alaskan rainbows etc etc etc, heavier rigs they are NP at all and save you mega bucks.

But for trout I love the supers, and hang the cost.

The unknown is the key I suppose. Fishing line, unless IFGA certified, is almost always stronger than the advertised breaking point. The problem that worries me is that they are said to do this to compensate for some variations in diameter on occasion. I'm not sure its worth the gamble, except for emergencies or the heavier sections of a leader.

Given the cost of flyfishing, I don't know that I want take a chance on the quality of the final link.

I've been using Vanish sence it came out and love it. I've tried some of the other tippets and still come back.

I buy 100yd spools of tippit and just tie as I go.

Knowing that there are only 5 makers of pure 100% flourocarbon on the planet, you know half the time you are using one material more than once marketed under a different wholesellers name.

So far, I like Orvis's material the best. Seagaur is a close second place runner up (its too much $).

The Rio FlouroFlexPlus is a little thin for my taste.. the Umpqua stuff is good.. very similar to the Orvis.

As far as major fishing line suppliers offering material used as tippit, I will just use the real mc coy.

Sometimes you get what you pay for, and I am not gonna risk that on the fish that sets records.
