CAMP COBBLER

12-inch Dutch Oven (with convex lid)

2 cans of pie filling (this time I used cherry)

1.5 packages of dry cake mix (this time I used chocolate)

1.5 sticks of butter

Preheat the Dutch oven (lid and base) over the campfire. Pull the base off and put a half stick of butter in the bottom. Dump in the two cans of pie filling. Pour the dry cake mix on top of the pie filling. Cut up one stick of butter and place the pats on the top of the dry cake mix. Put the lid on the Dutch oven. Pull some coals out of the fire and place the Dutch oven on top of them. Place some hot coals on the lid. Cook for 35-45 minutes or so. Enjoy!!

Made that for years, but we do it slightly different.

We line the Dutch with AL foil, pour 2 regular cans of fruit or pie filling in, put one regular sized cake mix on top of it, place pats of butter or margarine on top of the mix, and sprinkle a little sugar on it. We generally cook ours 40-45 minutes.

We like Spice cake over peaches with sugar, cinnamon and a touch of nutmeg on top.

Its hard to beat a dutch for camp cooking versatility.

I do cobblers occasionally, but most of the time I do pineapple upside down cake..nothing to it.

Mix Yellow cake mix per box, but use the juice from your can of pineapple rings instead of water.

Melt a stick of butter on the bottom of your Dutch Oven

Add a cup of Brown Sugar and disolve in butter

Add Pineapple Rings

Add Baking Cherries

Cover with cake mix

Shovel some coals out of the fire and cover the D.O..

Go light on the coals on the bottom, lots of coals on top.

Rotate lid every 10-15 minutes, check it its done around 40-45min..

When done..crack lid and let it cool for 10 min..

Remove lid...Run a metal spatula round the edges, cover top of D.O. with parchment paper or foil..Add lid.

Put on welders gloves and flip the cake.

Eat Cake with some Bushmills on the rocks, or Bushmills & Coffee before bed..

Check out Byron's Dutch Oven Page for some good recipes. Cheers.

I've been cooking in Dutch's for years and there is no limit. Recipes suitable for an oven or a crock pot work fine. I like the control of briquet's, but hardwood coals work well also.

Clean up with hot water doesn't hurt my feelings either.
