Looks like I'll be in the Branson area in mid July, and I should have at least a couple of good mornings for fishing. I tried this last year also, but this year I would actually like to catch fish.

I'm pretty much just looking for help here. I will be wading and using my 5wt fly rod most likely. What's my best bet for area to fish? I'd like to be able to wade and get to the fish without basically haveing to swim to them. I'm not crazy about the outlet crowds.

Should I access at the hatchery area or try from the other side of the lake?

Any must have flies?

fishing early morning in July...

Id start about 5am... just as it started breaking daylight...

hatchery side down by the boat ramp..or the rocking chair (south side) and make your way to the KOA.. there is an area right before the KOA that is wadeable but watch your step..

If I was to start that early in the morning.. Id start by swinging a size 12 or 14 soft hackle (or crackleback..like the TNS size 8) and go to a 16 when it got brighter .. or a size 8 wooly or leech.... if you see alot of surface active go with the soft hackles ....

as it got brighter around 8am.. Id start sight fishing if the hacth slowed down.. with sculpins....

then after that.. Id go home, take a nap... and go back out about 10pm that night.. but thats just me... :=D:

What Leonard said...

I like the area below outlet 1 if it isn't TOO crowded... But if I'm there, I'll cast a big sculpin at your head if you get too close... OH... wait.. that's only if you're Leonard or Duckydoty...

I think that I will be down Friday night the 13th of July around 11 pm, but I am no expert, not like Leonard or Terry. Post something that week and I will know for sure.

Click on the maps above and Phil has provided some great ideas on how to fish these areas in a variety of conditions.

Good luck

Why don't you guys come out that night, I would love to meet you, most of my fishing is done via the internet.

I'll buy the beer

I'm in.... :bringitout:

No, I won't commit at this point, but I'll do my best. Geez... that's the Friday before the plant shuts down on Monday... if things don't change... I'll need to celebrate...

We MIGHT accidently get Duckydoty to do some fishing down there, too if we twist his arm really really hard... :=D:

Thanks Leonard, that pretty much what I'm looking for. I'll try to get down there the day before to scout it a little bit. As far as access to the south end, I understand that there is access w/ parking somewhere??? And the KOA is downstream from the rebar/rockingchair area?

As far as soft hackles, I typically tie olives, hares ears, and something similar to a starling and herl. I generally also have an assortment of cracklebacks. What about mohair leeches? do they produce at Taney? What would you suggest for sculpins? I have heard good things about the pine squirrel pattern, but am not real familiar with it.

Thanks for the info so far.
