drew03cmc Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Ok, does anyone know of anywhere online that sells foam spiders in about a size 12? I am after some, and the local fly shop here stopped tying flies for customers so I have no source as I do not yet tie my own flies. I am in dire need as the gills are spawning and it is that time again! Thanks a million. Andy
timsfly Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 I just tie my own, they are so easy and cheap to tie, buy some bodies and have at it, when you are down, later this month I have a few bodies in black I sell, but you can make your own out of about any closed cell foam, I have made some neat ones out of just old flip flops, they float well and are very hard to tear up. I also make them out of open cell foam, sponge will work, these sink slow and sometimes the gills just tear them up, I caught to green sunfish yesterday over 10" and one of them I caught on a sinking spider type of fly, tied with yellow sponge, and black legs. Terry Beeson Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Add to Tim's comments - Those can coolers work well for foam, too. Use one of those paper hole punch (the single type) to punch out a body. Then rubber legs (of course)... You can make the legs out of thin rubber bands and color them with Sharpie markers. Same goes for the foam by the way. I know you said you don't tie, but they are SO easy, you should get someone to get you started... timsfly Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Sorry about that, didn't see the part about you not tying, PM me your address and I'll send you a few to get you by till you start tying or find some up your way, I have a few zillion tied up. jdmidwest Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 If all else fails, wally world usually carries a foam spider or a few poppers. I have been having best luck on San Juan worms in brown, a black soft hackle pattern, foam beetles, poppers, and a Lite Brite minnow imitation. Does the fly shop in Indy carry any flies? Crippled Caddis Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Good news! You don't have to be a tyer to make foam spiders. At the recent Sowbug get-together I watched Rich Vogel (at least I think that's his name) who has written so many of the warmwater articles on FAOL make spiders without using any thread at all. He simply threaded the foam body onto the hook like putting on a worm. He them threaded his rubber leg material into a big-eyed needle and 'sewed' them thru the body as well. I asked why he din't glue everything together and he said he just found it easier to pull the body back up the hook if it slid down and that it was easier to him to save the fly by rethreading leg material back thru the same hole if got lost or broken. I still think I'm gonna use Superglue on them when I 'get-a-round-to-it. ;0) CC "You need only reflect that one of the best ways to get yourself a reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating the very phrases which our founding fathers used in their struggle for independence." ---Charles Austin Beard

jdmidwest Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Sorry, I thought this was a panfish discussion. Somebody was talking about gills and I gave up a few patterns. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson

Sorry JD I just wanted to make sure what I knew what the topic was. I am always looking for a good panfish pattern. I would rather be fishin'. drew03cmc Posted June 16, 2007 Author Posted June 16, 2007 Tim, you have a PM, and I will talk to you about the tying stuff when I am down there. I will need the basics, but will probably have to order them from you...you know how that goes. Thanks a million guys! I appreciate it. Andy
