Terry Beeson Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 GF, Five grandkids who would raid the video shelf that grandma had collected for them (mostly Disney movies) and a "Poppa... will you watch this one with me?" and you will forget the rod and reel for a couple of hours... Now another one on the way (the first with my new bride) and I can't wait to hear that "Poppa... will you..." question again. Terry Beeson Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 Wayne, I'm Poppa... Those were my grandkids asking me to watch "Dumbo" with them... Of course that was the first time I saw Dumbo since when I was a kid, the theater was 12 miles from home and my parents didn't have a dime to give me to get in... YOU were lucky... gonefishin Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 When I was a kid I used to watch Mutual of Omaha and Disney and Hew Haw. That was when I was a kid. Nowadays I would rather go fishing than watch TV. Of course GKids have a say in my rathers. I would rather be fishin'. "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Terry, I understand that. When I was a kid if we would have ever said to Mom and Dad that we were bored they would have found another bunch more chores for us to do on the farm. Any time we had a little bit of free time we sure stayed out from under their feet and out of their way. We were seldom seen and seldom heard. We had very little TV to watch and found other ways to entertain our selfs. Outside and the barn was our play grounds, never in the house unless it was just way to cold. You know zero or below. A second hand bike and a used Zebco 202 was a great thing and we sure kept it put up because if we did't we would be back to using a stick and some string. I know by todays world it sounds bad but truthfully I think it was GREAT! Fish slow and easy! Borrowed this one from..........Well you know who! A proud memer of P.E.T.A (People Eating Tasty Animals)
Terry Beeson Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 The "Survivor Nixa" story on my website talked about my 11 year old step-daughter being bored all while the electricity was out - no TV, no video games, no electronics period. It was a bit of an exaggeration in that she enjoyed reading by flashlight and did quite well. BUT... when I was a kid and the lights were out during a snowstorm, I was out with my BB gun or better (as I got older) and discovering what was for supper... You bet... one "I'm bored" and I would have been splitting wood for the fireplace... Chief Grey Bear Posted June 20, 2007 Author Posted June 20, 2007 You guys had TV! Well, sorta. One neighbor had a TV. The other had a telephone and we had an electric refridgerator. Then when I was about 14 an fancy neighbor moved in our way from the big city. They had a car. No more walking to town on Saturday after choring was done.
