Good analogy there, and the ratio of income left over to spend is about right, 50 percent take home pay to spend after the gov takes their part.....

That should make it clear and simple and illustrate why we have license fees also to supplement the tax revenue.

As far as land goes, the MDC waits for someone to offer property to them, they don't attend sales to buy property. They don't want to give the impression that they can come in a buy up stuff with their great buying power. I do know they have made several purchases to compliment the lands they already have.

If you want a detailed report, here it is. MDC is a public state entity that has to account for every dime.

They have made several purchases to compliment the lands they already have??? I know of none. Are they open for use? Where are they located? Was the land donated to them? Or did they over pay for it? I really would like to know.

I think their afraid to say. However as tax payers we have the right to know. But getting an to tell and show us is another story. I am starting to think there is something fishy going on.

jdmidwest do you work for them?

The "MDC Annual Report" posted for all to see...well, whatever...IMO, it's little more than a very well done "Cookbook"...and there is nothing rare about that.

Not to be a cynic jc, but asking for accountability from bureaucracy is the functional equivilent of expecting virginity in widows. ;o)

The problem with our political system lies with the electorate rather than with those elected. The realist expects elected officials to be crooks. The problem is that we keep putting the same crooks back in office. That allows them to build a bureaucratic cadre who owe them. Throw out the crooks every election cycle until it gets through the thick heads of those who would seek office that the only way to maintain their own status is to be responsive to those who elect them and you break the entire cycle.

If the American electorate ever comes to fully understand the principle of "Throw the Bastards out" the problems from which we collectively suffer can be corrected in only a few election cycles.

If you (ALL of you reading this!) have ever cast your vote for someone who has performed in a less than totally satisfactory manner as your representative in his first opportunity to please you then the problem is YOU!

So long as the American political system continues to operate by the 'spoils' system then re-electing anyone is a distinct case of getting what you so richly deserve. Above all be suspicious of anyone who seeks office. To do so is tacit admission of criminal intent in the current political climate. In order for our political system to work as intended office holders should be drafted against their will.;o) CC

Seems theres more going on here than just not liking the way MDC is managed,I don't know what, and really don't care.I just don't like speculation that something is bad or corrupt without proof. That so called cookbook is no different than any other state or federal publisized budget.Give me some proof.

Brownieman you didn't use to work for the News Leader did you?

No I don't work for them! I am just concerned enough about my favorite pastime to get to know the ones that manage it. I know alot of the people that manage the fisheries, forests, and enforcement in MO and Ark depts. They are a great bunch of guys and a wealth of info if you ask the right questions. And your opinions and ideas will go a great way if you share it with them. Why would they be afraid to talk to you in a civil manner, unless you are wild eyed and crazy!

I really don't know what you are getting at or what more detail you need. They have a website, regional offices, and various other ways to contact them. If you are mad at them because they idled their truck with the A/C on while they wrote a ticket or investigated a probable game violation, call the local district and vent on them.

It would be nice to see someone riled up about all of the fuel taxes we pay for roads but have one of the worst highway systems in the US. How about accounting for all of the rest of the sales tax? What about federal and state income tax?

I think somebody already said this, but geez, I know of a LOT of land MDC has bought since the advent of the sales tax. In the Current River country, they bought something like 14,000 acres from one seller. (Kerr-McGee Corp.) There are about 50 river accesses now to every ONE they had before the sales tax...in fact, I'm not sure they had ANY accesses before.

The plan, which they stated very clearly for anybody who wanted to read in the years just before and after the start of the sales tax (Design for Conservation) was to have a big push the first 10 years to buy as much land as possible. After that, land purchases were to be scaled back and the money would go toward developing and maintaining what they had. For the most part, they have done that, while still occasionally buying land from willing sellers. If you want to see what they own, get a Conservation Atlas. There are a few counties that might only have 6 or 8 MDC owned parcels, but most counties have a lot more.

By the way...I have some acquaintances in the department, mainly the biologists. I am not in any way affiliated with them. I have furnished them artwork in the past--almost entirely for free.

The MO DNR is who runs the state parks. They also are charged with environmental protection in the state, including such things as monitoring water pollution and regulating gravel mining, to mention a couple of things dear to anglers. The MO Geological Survey, which produces topo maps and researches mining issues and exploration, is also a part of the DNR. They get half of a tenth of a percent sales tax, earmarked for the state parks. Other than that, they are entirely dependent upon user fees and mainly upon legislative appropriations. The last I heard, they could only afford 5 inspectors for the whole state who have the responsibility for checking gravel mining sites and responding to complaints about water pollution. And they are entirely under the thumb of a legislature that is, for the most part, pretty hostile to most forms of environmental protection (including regulating gravel mining). If MO DNR and MDC merged, I can almost guarantee you the legislature would cease most appropriations for DNR, figuring that with TWO bits of sales taxes they didn't need it. Both agencies would suffer, while the legislature happily spent the money on stuff most people like us would not think much of. The legislature has tried more than once to raid the MDC money, and would do so again.

Kerr-McGee Corp? If I recall right thats a crude oil company!!! Hummm I wonder just what that cost?????????

Well I have called and ask questions and I am always steped around. How about someone else calling and trying to find out just what land they have bought and what inprovements they have made and just when will it open for our use? SORRY IF I AM A BAD BOY FOR ASKING. BUT A PART OF IT IS OR WAS MY MONEY!!!!!

As far as fuel taxes and such I didn't think this was the place to debate them. But if you wish I can. Did you kow Kansas has an added tax of 10 cents per gallon for roads? And did you know they wern't using it for that untill a bunch of people started questioning their ways! So lets not even go there. I thought this forum was for the issue of fish and game. Other taxes are another issue.

The legislature has tried more than once to raid the MDC money? Well then maybe mind you just maybe they might want to spend it on something productive so that they wouldn't have a large surplus of cash and a lot of things they could cut. And just maybe they could raise the wages a little for the field agents we have out there working the butt off! I am not buying in to the idea that they arn't wasting or giving huge amounts of money. SOrry it just don't add up. JMO
