jcoberley Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Nice pic. Hey, I hear tell gar tender loin is very tasty! Was told to scoop it out like making mellon balls and fry them up. I was going to try it but I couldn't get my knife to cut the skin! Fish slow and easy! Borrowed this one from..........Well you know who! A proud memer of P.E.T.A (People Eating Tasty Animals)
RiverRunner Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 I've caught hundreds of gar, and yes, the meat is good, almost like lobster. The problem is cutting through their skin, which is almost like armor. If you can ever get a hole punched in the skin, you can take tin snips and cut it. The hard part is getting a hole punched. You might try a drill. That was a great picture to say the least.
Kayser Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 I have found that fish arrows make very nice holes in the skin. Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.

Trivia fact for the day: much of the imitation crab meat that you can buy is actually gar flavored with crab juice. Mmmmm, gar. ::. JobyKSU Tippet Breaker Extraordinaire
