Fishing Report Night of the 9th

Recommended Posts

Eric and I were able to get down and fish last night with a friend from Canton, Ga. We started at 11 and fished until 3:30am. We started down in the big hole with the water falling the water level when we started was 704. The bite was pretty good but we had to pretty much not move the fly just let it swing. I have been tying up some new wet flies that a Friend showed me and I thought that thy might work at night. The first thing I thought when he showed me the fly was it would be a great fly with one unit on but he said he had been catching fish on it most any time.

I came to the shop and tied several up in various colors and so did Eric, but here I go again black and purple seem to be my two best colors. I would like to think that the fish do not watch the color but I guess they do. I have tried a few other colors black/chartreuse, white/orange, black/yellow. the two that work the best are the black/blue, purple/red.

I fished them for the first time with my wife on Saturday and caught a few fish but last night it was on with the new but old fly. New to me but old to the world of fly fishing.

We fished our way up out of the big hole to the cable and had one nice Rainbow and one nice Brown both would go about 18 inches.

So were up by the cable working our way out and I keep thinking to myself we should be able to see Eric but no little Eric where was he did he get eaten by the giant squid or what. So I yelled, hey Eric and he answered from the bank sounded like I woke him up yes that is right he was on the bank not fishing but sleeping.

All in all the bite was pretty slow you had to work the fly real slow and half the time not even move the fly. Between the 3 of us even though Eric did not fish half the night I would say that we had 45-50 fish between the 3 of us. Brad is addicted to the Mohair leech he fished a blood red and black most of the night. I continued to fish the wet fly black and purple were my to best colors.

:hmmm: Eric was sleepin', huh? :nitex:

That's it... he's fired!!

Swing and no strip again, huh? No stripping it back? Just cast, drift, swing, hold for a few seconds, repeat?

Stupid fish... Don't they know they're gonna ruin our reputations? :goodjob:

Leonard,

What is the PMS

Where did you start fishing with the leech at 10 because the water according to the graph was at 709.96 sounds pretty high to be able to wade, or even be able to cast a big fly like that out and be able to strip it back in as you said you did.

I have fished quite a bit down there when the water is high like that and it is hard to get a good cast because you are so close to the trees. So I would like to know where you would fish such a fly in high water.

Why are you cast such big flies down there on Taney is it really that necessary especially this time of year. and I was also wondering how many hooks do you have in one of those big flies.

the PMS (as some would call it) is a modified fly I came across...

who said I started with the leech??

If you look at the chart you can see where the water started to drop...

(check this if you want!!) they shut the units down between 10:15-10:30 and turn one back one... I was there when they blow the horn... so I went up to outlet 1... you can stand in outlet "FACING" down stream and get a good cast... yes the trees are close but you can get it out there...

I had a guide trip out a few nights ago and we caught fish on big flies...

and I am using a 2 hook system (a size 6 and a size 8)

If truth be know.. Im only using these big flies for practice... Im trying to find out where I can use them.. where the deep holes are.. and how the fish react to a big fly...(so far so good!!)

the reason for the bigger flies.. is I'll know what I need to be tying for this fall... If I can catch 20in fish at any giving time of the year (like on this new fly).. then that tells me when the bigger fish comes in that should be a better fly.. right?

Eric... we used the guys camera that night.. so he has the picture.. I know what I caught.. and I guess you'll just have to wait till he sends it to me...
