Bittle Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 Me and my brother are gonna make a trip on Thursday to fish the tailwater below truman dam. The questions I have are. Is there a good place to get minnows right now? Where is the best place to catch shad with a throw net to cut up? We are planning on setting up a tent, I was there years ago and we fished on bledsoe ferry side of the lake. I seem to remember a campground somewhere just right there. If anybody can help me let me know. We are going for cats, crappie and whites......or whatever else bites. Would be great to have some help here.
Dutch Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 There is a campground on the road to the dam called Pecan Grove. You might want to have a look at this link before you pack your stuff. http://missouriwhitetails.com/forums/viewt...9513&page=1
slider Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 BITTLE: YOU CAN GET MINNERS AT THE STATION JUST UP FROM THE PEACN CAMPGROUND. WAS UP THERE LAST THURSDAY AND HAD A HARD TIME DID CATCH A FEW. THEY SELL A SLAB HUNTER AT THE STATION THAT IS A GOOD BAIT OR YOU MIGHT TRY USING A SASSY SHAD. THEY CAN TELL YOU WHAT TO USE AT THE STATION. I MIGHT COME UP THIS THURSDAY. ILL BE THERE AROUND 7:30. I LIKE TO NIGHT FISH UP THERE. LOOK FORE SOMEONE WITH A CAMO FIOCCHI CAP WITH A RED LIGHT ON THE BIL. SLIDER DONT EVER GIVE UP MOSES WAS A BASKET CASE ONCE!
Bittle Posted July 12, 2007 Author Posted July 12, 2007 Slider, Me and my brother will be up there on Thursday evening some time. We will probably fish till early morning. Ill be wearing a blue cards hat and he drives a white chevy pickup. Come over and say hi, between the 3 of us surely we can figure out how to catch a few. Bittle
gonefishin Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 You should be able to find some shad with your throw net but if you dont go to the station and buy some of the biggest shiners they got and use them. Works for me when I cant get shad. I would rather be fishin'. "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." Members vince Posted July 13, 2007 Members Posted July 13, 2007 Hey would you guys post a report of your trip. Use to fish up there quite a bit, but not in the last couple of years. Use to fish on the side of the bath house, just down from the storm water drain. Fished jigs mostly and caught crappies whites and hybrids. The station would always be helpful with advice and bait and tackle. Thanks Vince
Bittle Posted July 14, 2007 Author Posted July 14, 2007 Well I just got back from Truman. It wasn't a complete washout but it could have been better. The first night we got there, Thursday, there was a bunch of people there. We tried the throw net for shad but caught nothing bigger than an inch or two. And you could find them by the droves. Picked up some frozen shad at the station and headed to the east side of the river and throw some bait. We started about dark and fished until about 230am. Total tally on night one was: 1 drum. We saw plenty of people with fish not too many reeling them in but plenty of good fish. Saw one guy with 2 nice walleye and a legal crappie. Biggest cat was about 35 pounds. We threw everything from plastic lures to roostertails to swimming minnows. No luck on anything. Day 2 we woke up about 10am and decided to try and find the mid day bite as one gentleman said he was doing well in the heat of the day. About 45 min after the first bait in the water I caught a nice 20lb channel. Nothing else. Saw a few crappie being caught under a jig and float but nothing notable. All Short. One thing that was unbelieveable is the amount of small shad and minnows in the water. They are up in the area in the millions. hard for a crappie to choose your bait over live stuff. Good Luck
gonefishin Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 Sounds like a good outing to me. Any day fishing at Truman, or anywhere else for that matter, is better than working or honeydo's I would rather be fishin'. "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. slider Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 BITTLE: THAT WAS ME WITH THE 2 WALLEYE AND CRAPPIE. SORRY I MISSED YOU I LOOKED FORE SOMEBODY IN A BLUE CARDS HAT BUT DIDNT SEE ONE. WE LEFT ABOUT 11:00 THE OTHER 2 GUYS HAD 1 CRAPPIE EACH. I NEVER CAUGHT ANOTHER FISH. IM WONDERING IF THE FISHING MIGHT BE BETTER DURING THE DAY. THE LAST TWO TRIPS WE HAVE CAUGHT A FEW BEFORE DARK AND THEN NOTHING AFTER. I MIGHT BE UP FORE A COUPLE OF DAYS NEXY WEEK. I THINK ILL TRY DURING THE DAY. WHAT IS THE TALK IN ST. LOIS ABOUT ALBERT NOT GETTING TO PLAY IN THE ALLSTAR GAME? MAYBE WE WOULD BETTER OF IF LARUSSA WOULD GO TO CINCY. SLIDER DONT EVER GIVE UP MOSES WAS A BASKET CASE ONCE!
Bittle Posted July 14, 2007 Author Posted July 14, 2007 Yeah my blue cards hat is a little faded and dirty. We didn't do great. We did see a guy catch some crappie during the day. Not many though, probably 2. Only 1 keeper. Hope you have better luck next time. Keep us updated on your trips. Bittle
