vanven Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 I will be in the Florissant, CO. area for a week at the end of August with my wife and her family. It is about 30 minutes west of Colorado Springs. I am looking for some suggestions for day trips where i can get my waders and fly rod wet. My Google searches haven't been all that productive. It needs to be somewhat accessable and not extremely technical, the wife and dog will be with me. Any suggestions on equipment? Standard 5wt rod and light leaders? -Jerod Wow, my first double post. Sorry.... -Jerod
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted July 25, 2007 Root Admin Posted July 25, 2007 Eleven Mile and Spinney- both have tailwaters and there's a river above Eleven Mile that I fished a few years back that wasn't too bad. I did like the box canyon river below 11 mile- real pretty and lots of trout. Easy drive from Florissant.
vanven Posted July 25, 2007 Author Posted July 25, 2007 I really appreciate the info Lilley. It is a bit overwhelming to try and plan a trip based on random web searches. -Jerod
Rusty Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 My brother is in that area right now, and he fished 11 Mile today. He said they were the only ones on that stretch of the river. They had a great day using dry flies. He got all his information from a fly shop in Colorado Springs. Good luck, and have a great time.
motroutbum Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 That river is aka the South Platte. can be tough fishing. you should drive up and fish at the deckers bridge, or plan a day trip and drive up to estes and fish the Big T or the Poudre. There are many waters to wet a fly around there. There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!

Usually in the morning hours and dying off toward noon. I was hoping to go out myself. Flatlander You can give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.

Flatlander I was thinking this would be a good trip to really get some dry fly fishing done and get away from nymphing for a few days. Sounds like it might be just that type of opportunity. -Jerod
John Berry Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 I fished eleven Mile a few years ago and really enjoyed it. You can drive way back to a trophy area. I did the best there. Members tinner Posted August 1, 2007 Members Posted August 1, 2007 I lived in Colorado Spring for about 7 years and there are quite a few places to fish. Just like the previous posts Spinney, Elevenmile, and the South Platte are all good bets. Here are some more lakes and rivers within a 30 minute drive. Just west of where you will be staying is a place called Tarryall Resevoir and Tarryall creek (if going West turn right just past Saint George).I always had good luck this time of the year in the west end of the lake, this the shallow end and allows for some wading if you don't have a float tube. I caught alot of fish out of here a couple rainbows and one brown were 3lbs.+.I didn't fish Tarryall creek that much but I heard it was real good. It's a small meadow like creek. Watch out for trespassing signs because alot of it is private. Another good spot is Antero Resevoir it is just west of you past Hartsel. There are some real hogs in there! As for flies all I can say is HALFBACKS!!! Sizes 8 to 14. They work really well there in the resevoirs, I hardly ever had to change flies. I hope this helps some.
vanven Posted August 7, 2007 Author Posted August 7, 2007 Thanks a lot for the info Tinner! The trip is getting close and I am getting excited. -Jerod
