Members D.T. Posted August 4, 2007 Members Posted August 4, 2007 Does anyone sharpen the hooks on their flies's? I have tried this in the past and end up worse than when I started. We had the good opportunity to have Bill Butts at our monthly fly club meeting and in one of his points he talked about keeping a sharp hook. I didnt have the chance to ask him about this after the meeting. If you do sharpen your hooks how do you do it and what do you use and how often do you do this? Thanks, Dave
Dutch Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 I don't fly fish but I do sharpen a lot of hooks. I have a handy little gizmo (EzeLap) which came from Fin and Feather in Spfd. http://www.ztackle.com/products.asp?cat=302
Thom Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Just a couple of rubs of a fine file or diamond tool like shown in download is all you need. To check if the hook is sharp just rub it across your nail... If it sticks with very little pressure you are all set. Be sure when you pass the hook across the hook push the tool from the point along each side toward the bend otherwise you may leave a burr on the end that may impede the hook from going into the fish's mouth. On hook ups every little bit helps. Thom Harvengt
