Members MoMuskies Posted August 11, 2007 Members Posted August 11, 2007 Too hot to musky fish so I've been educating myself on OAF. Often, in the musky boards the post on "Lures to help a beginer" comes up for discussion. My favorite musky lures that I would recommend for a newbie musky hunter: Top water - Jackpot 1/3 below surface - Suick 2/3 below surface - Jointed DepthRaider Bottom - BullDog I would like to hear from the experts as to what to get for my fly box that would enable me to fish Tanney's trophy water area. Thanks
Leonard Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 I couldnt tell how effective these would be during the day but at night..this is what I use for lures (other then flies) 6'6"- med-lite a good spinning reel.. 6-8lb maxima line 4-7in smithwicks (fall) rapalas all kinds & size.. rainbow, baby browns, black & silver, gold & silver.. floaters work the best.. suspending works good... and alway have couple of countdowns (those work the best in high water 3-4 units) dont forget the jointed ones rebals works, go small... yo-zuri pin minnows are GREAT for day fish.. flashy, great profile, but are high end ($7-9 ea).. but are worth the money. also jigs.. Phil could fill you in on these.. but olive, white, black, gray, and tan are the top colors...from 1/16 down to a 1/100 (between 1/64-1/125s work good under floats) most of the hard baits will be best if used in the 2-4in range.. but go bigger in the fall Leonard http://www.taneycomonights.com
Danoinark Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 I am certainly not an expert, but I can tell you what I carry and seems successful for me and would not be without on any Ozarks tailwater. WebFreeman Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Seems very thorough, Dan. One thing you could add is the zebra midge in black, red, and what else? I guess just about any combo you could think of. “Many go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” — Henry David Thoreau Visit my web site @ webfreeman.com for information on freelance web design.
Leonard Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 for some reason when I first read that post I thought you were looking for a start of Hard Baits (stickbaits)... I sorry I just misunderstood what you wrote.. Id agree with dano also,, Leonard http://www.taneycomonights.com
Danoinark Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Web, I can't believe I didn't include midges. I use them probably as much as soft hackles. I'll edit that list..Dan Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
WebFreeman Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Your list is helpful, too, Leonard. Esp. since after about 20 minutes of fly casting in the dark would ruin all my gear. So, do you work those stick baits on top? Fast, slow? I tried some a few summers about off the dock at Cooper Creek in the middle of the night and got nothing. “Many go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” — Henry David Thoreau Visit my web site @ webfreeman.com for information on freelance web design.
denjac Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 One bait that is a must for me for spin gear is a a super duper. Gold and red seem to work the best for me.Although i haven't been on Taney this year, last year I tore em up with this lure in the restricted area. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. Leonard Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Web... I dont remember getting to use those baits down that far at night.. denjac... you talking about using this lure during the day right?? another few more good ones during the day is: rooster tails (web.. these are what I would throw down stream at night to get alot of noise.. in the bigger sizes).... also a few good day times lures... the little jakes (aka dominos)in gold and silver always have a few jigs little cloes get a few castmasters (take the little hook off the back and add marabou tails (in a range of colors)on it... up size the hook to the next size... this will really draw in a few strikes... if your were to "try" to load a box that would be just lures only... youd have about 100 or so lures that would work on any giving "night that would" produce fish 90% of the time.. http://www.taneycomonights.com
