Members bodyman50 Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 My son & I had been planning a trip to Bennett Springs on the 22nd til we saw they were cutting moss that day. I was wondering if we had a choice which would be the better day, the day before, the day of, or the day after the cutting. We travel about 5 1/2 hrs to get there, so any advice would be much appreciated. Bodyman50
duckydoty Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 I have never fished during moss cutting but have heard from others here that it is not a fun time to fish. I really have no idea if one day would be enough to clear it all out, so my guess would be (if I had to fish Bennett) to fish the day before. Other wise I would go to Roaring River, Montauk, or if they shut the water off----Taney. duckydoty A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Luke Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 If they are cutting, move up towards the spring, it's the first place to clear. --Luke
trout fanatic Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 If given a choice of the day before, the day of or the day after, I would certainly not pick the day of. I don't think there will be too much difference between the day before or the day after though. The river does a great job of cleansing itself of the weeds etc so they won't be a contributing factor the day after. So if it were me, I would pick the day that best fit my schedule and not worry about it. Tight lines, and good luck. Dale
DeepDiver75 Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 The last time I fished 2 days after a moss cutting the trash was still evident in the stream. Not enough to make it unfishable but enough to keep you picking little bits of weeds off your line everey few casts. The fish were really keying on small olive scuds that day as I believe that the moss cutting dislodged large numbers of them into the food base. Was just at BSSP on Sat. and the fishing is lights out right now. Some of the better holding areas have so many fish that it's almost too easy. Stay small with your flies and weights/indicators and definitely use 7x if possible. I had a buddy this weekend that started off with a mono tippet and it didn't take him half an hour of watching us catch a fish a drift with the 7x flouro to switch over. As far as the moss, if possible I'd go the day before. There are large amounts of it in the stream right now and some areas may have worse residual effects than others.
