slider Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 MADE OUR USUAL THURSDAY TRIP TO THE DAM AND SAW SOMETHNG WE CANT FIGURE OUT. WOULD LIKE SOME HELP. AROUND 9:30 THERE WAS A SOUND LIKE A 22 SHOT AND SHAD JUMPED OUT OF THE WATER FORE ABOUT 100 YARDS IN A STRATE LINE. MY DAUGHTER WAS WITH ME AND GOT SCARED I TRIED TO JUST FORGET IT AND KEEP HER FISHING. MAYBE 10 TO 15 MINUTES SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. I COULDNT FIGURE IT OUT. WE WERENT CATCHING ANY SO WE MOVED DOWN WHERE THE REST OF THE CROWED WAS AND THEY ASKED ME IF I HAD HEARED THE SOUND AND SAW THE SHAD JUMP, THEY HAD SEEN THE SAME THING AS WE DID. THIS MADE THE DISTANCE ABOUT 300 YARDS. WOULD LIKE SOME INFO IF ANYBODY COULD EXPLAIN. WE STARTED CATCHING FISH WHEN WE GOT WITH THE REST OF THE GROUP. I SAW DOITLOOKIT AND HAD A VISIT WITH HIM FORE A WHILE WAS GOOD TO MET HIM. WHEN HE LEFT I TOOK HIS SPOT AND ME AND MY DAUGHTER CAUGHT 14 WHITES AND 3 CRAPPIE WASNT AS GOOD AS LAST WEEK BUT A FUN NIGHT WITH MY GIRL. SHE DID CATCH THE BIG FISH OF THE NIGHT WHEN SHE SNAGED ABOUT A 60 LBS POUND SPOONBILL, SHE FOUGHT IT FORE ABOUT 15 MINUTES UNTIL SHE WOREOUT AND I TOOK OVER JUST ABOUT HAD IT TO THE BANK WHEN THE JIG CAME OUT BUT SHE DID GET A GOOD LOOK AT IT. WHEN WE CAME HOME WE HAD ABOUT 35 TO 40 FISH WITH THE OTHER GUYS THAT WERE ALONG MOSTLY WHITES AND A FEW CRAPPIE 1 6LB FLATHEAD. SLIDER DOITLOOKIT WERE YOU STILL THERE WHEN THE SHAD JUMPED? DONT EVER GIVE UP MOSES WAS A BASKET CASE ONCE!
Seth Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 What kind of jigs do you fish with up there? I am heading up there today to fish for some white bass, crappie, and catfish.
brownieman Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 did the noise sound like it came from the bank or the water? i've been startled before by beavers smacking their tails on the water at night in smaller lakes...sometimes they make a pretty loud pop on a still night. just a guess...shows how sensitive fish are to sound though in or out of the water. My friends say I'm a douche bag ?? Avatar...mister brownie bm <><
DOITLOOKIT Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Slider, yes we were there when the shad would explode up and down the lake. Something I have never seen before. I don't know what triggers it. We were up there again last nite and got into the hybrids about 11:00 P.M. Came home with a limit of hybrids over 18 inches and the rest of whites to fill limits of whites and hybrids. Had about 8 keeper crappie and 2 nice cats. Need to take a day off. Its my grandson's birthday. We were counting up and including all the guys, we had 11 white limits this week. Numerous crappie and cats.
Seth Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 Me and a buddy went up and fished the west side. We never caught any catfish using cut drum and shad, but had tons of bites just nothing big enough to hook. We were throwing small tube jigs and caught around 30 crappie and 2 nice white bass. There were about 15 crappie that were over 9" that we kept.
slider Posted August 21, 2007 Author Posted August 21, 2007 SETH SORRY I DIDNT GET TO RESPOND TO YOU BEFORE YOU WENT UP SOUNDS LIKE YOU DID ALRIGHT THOUGH. WE FISHED WITH 16 OZ. AND 32 OZ. JIGHEADS WITH PURPLE BEETLES. WE FISH WITH SWIMING MINNOWS AND SLIDERS IF WE FISH BEFORE DARK BUT MOSTLY PURPLE OR BLACK BEETLES AFTER DARK. SLIDER DONT EVER GIVE UP MOSES WAS A BASKET CASE ONCE!
Seth Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Thanks for the info. When you say beetles, do you mean beetle spins? Those crappie sure do taste good, but I'd rather feel the hard tug from a white bass on the end of my ultralight any day.
slider Posted August 21, 2007 Author Posted August 21, 2007 SETH: WE DONT USE THE SPINNER WHEN WE FISH WITH A BEETLE JUST THE BEETLE ON A JIGHEAD. IM SURE THEY WOULD WORK THOUGH THEY WOULD BE JUST ABOUT LIKE AN IDIOT PLUG THE ROSTERTAIL. A ROSTERTAIL DOES WORK ALL JOKES ASIDE THAT IS WHAT MY BROTHERINLAW CAUGHT THE 6LB FLATHEAD ON THURSDAY. AS FORE ME I DONT LIKE THE WAY THEY TWIST YOUR LINE, BUT THATS WHAT MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND. SLIDER DONT EVER GIVE UP MOSES WAS A BASKET CASE ONCE!
Seth Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 I need to get me some rooster tails. All you have to do is put a swivel on your line and then attach the rooster tail to it and you don't have to worry about line twist.
