Fishhand Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Hi Leonard, I don't doubt that you are catching some nice trout. Wherever I'm fishing I watch other people to help my own casting, mending, etc. I was fishing across from #1 last week out on the hump and saw you standing in the outlet. There was no generation at the time. I watched to see if I could pick up any of your techniques. You had about 6' of line out the end of your flypole. It looked like you were tossing your streamer in front of you and letting it sit right on the edge of the chute where it hits the lake (in the fast water)...Over and over...hardly ever more than the 6' of line out the end of your flypole (plus leader and tippet). Is this the technique? Do you spot the fish and then stick the bait in front of their face? Thanks for any info, jim
flyfshn Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 I have to jump on the band wagon and defend Leonard.....and Leonard, I hope you don't mind what I am about to say. We came down to Taney for the week of July 4th. I had seen Leonard's posts and sent him a pm asking for some advice on flies to use during the day and at night. He replied and asked if I was looking for a guide or just some pointers. I told him that I was just looking for some advice, so I could take my son and one of my daughters out and catch some nice fish.....I could not afford a guide right now because I have 3 teenagers and one of them was about to start college. Leonard told me that if my schedule was flexible, he would take us out one night and show us a few things about night fishing. I was reluctant becuase I did not want to take him away from a paying customer, but I did......and we had a BLAST!! I have been fishing for a little over 3 years and he taught us a lot.....and we caught a ton of fish! Every time the fish stopped biting, he would come over and tie on a new fly....and we would start catching more fish. We fished from 11:45 to 4am and he wore us out....He would have kept fishing, but our legs were numb! We had so much fun and learned so much, that I could not remember the names of all the flies we used (I normally use size 16-20 flies and the ones we used were MUCH bigger). I was like a kid on Xmas morning! ........so, I believe his fishing reports! Fish On! Mike Utt “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. Hey, keep me advised as to just when it is you'll be fishing Taney! As for everyone else! Its great to be back! I've been a bit out of touch with the BB in recent weeks due to a busy schedule else where! I'll have to head on down there in the coming weeks and get to know the new folk that have come on board! Danoinark Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 I actually wasn't going to even get involved in this thread. I probably should just leave it alone. I have seen Leonard catch big quality fish, and in great quantities. Likewise he has always been quick to answer questions, offer to help and ask others to tag along if they like. As to technique one of the things I can say about his ability is that he is stealthy. I have sat on the bench overlookng #2 and watched him stand on the bank, not getting his feet wet, and catch numerous large fish. That gents brings up this old time agdage. "Don't stand where you should be fishing". Many of us are guilty of that. He is doing a good job of sight fishing and putting that bug in front of the one he is targeting. If you can see them you can catch them. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
jjtroutbum Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 I would also like to thank The Night Angler for leading me to my very first fish of 07' a 20" brown caught at about 4am the morning of the 1st. Used his flies that morning and have had success with a few similar patterns since on other waters. Thanks you for your willingness to share some of your trade secrets and the very positive welcome of you and others at the New years get together. Members RandyL Posted August 29, 2007 Members Posted August 29, 2007 If you guys want to accept that all the fish caught were Browns and were 20-21 inches each thats fine. (no 12 inch rainbows?) I said nothing about my skills/experience compared to others. I'm sure most of you are much better Taney trout fisherman than me. I realize that guides need to paint a good story, but this one stretches it too far for me.
Members wildminnow Posted August 29, 2007 Members Posted August 29, 2007 hey Randy get off his case its not like this is taxidermist telling a story

While there are many different philosophies to catch fish, there are 2 basic, you can go for numbers or you can go for size. If you go for size you won't catch as many, but they will be bigger. IMHO, meet Leonard at Taney and see it with your own eyes, otherwise you are just talking about something you don't know about.
Members FliTrap4 Posted August 30, 2007 Members Posted August 30, 2007 RandyL.... I hear you but still find your approach a bit funny! But then, I have gotten the same kind of response from a few doubting persons when I tell my story of the great day I had down on Norfork! 117 trout... while standing in one short section of a ripple... 10am to 4pm, on a Sunday, last year in May! No bragging intended... yes I counted every one of them fishes and they were all caught on one pattern.... size 18-20 BWO (tied my way, for sure!)killed off some 24 of them little flies while using 7x tippet. I have had a get other grand days both on the White River as well as Taney, but nothing in the numbers like that one day! I agree that you will hear a "story" or two from folks that use a good guess to describe a day fishing! There are those who do catch large fish and many of them! I say, come on down and catch a sighting of them yourself! Watching is free! And if you catch me wetting a line, yell out something nice and join in the fun! You can measure and count for me! FliTrap Dano! I know I keep saying we gots to get together..... LOL Been way too long! Looking like I'll be down at Rim shoals the Monday through Thursday of the Southern Conclave. Did you catch my name in the SC-FFF "Long Casts" paper? yep.... presenting program on Friday! But you'll have to drop by the river to see any of my tying work! Everyone up this way trying to stay healthy! You take care! FliTrap
