timsfly Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 There are a bunch of us out there that strictly Catch and release, I don't have a problem with people who keep and eat them, that is what the conservation dept. raises them for. But who would be interested in a yearly Catch and release permit, and how do you think this would be best handled. I would like it myself, of course I live near Roaring River and fish a lot and it would be a great thing for me and a lot of the other locals, but if we had a C&R yearly permit, you could go down and fish. I think it should be flies only C&R, I don't have anything against the bait guys but there is going to more injury to trout by bait fishing, it can't be helped the fastest hook set sometimes can't set the hook before the trout can swallow the bait. And lets face it some guys can use bait and injure few trout but most can't. So what do you think, and keep the comments good and positive if you can, because I know several conservation dept heads that monitor this site. Just to see what we are up to. I would want the permit to cover all 4 missouri trout parks. Let me know what you think. Thank you for reading all this. flyfshn Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 I'm all for it and would buy one. I think it is a great idea, but have no idea how you would get that approved. Fish On! Kansas Fly Fisher Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 I like the idea also. I'd buy one, but like flyfshn said - how would you get it approved? It's worth looking into. John Born to Fish, Forced to Work KSMEDIC.COM
Chief Grey Bear Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 Well, I gotta be honest and say that I'm not in favor. What do you think is a fair price? I wouldn't be in favor of fly only. I agree with your point about bait but I like tossing small crankbaits. Should I be excluded? jdmidwest Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 I participated in a survey a few years back while fishing at Montauk. They had several ideas back then. The problem was more people using the parks and catching fish and they can only produce X amount of the fish with the current hatchery productions. They asked for several solutions. One was a catch and release only 1 or 2 days in the middle of the week when pressure was low. My response was, are you going to release any fish during these days? The response was no, so I responded with who would want to spend money to fish a park with no fish. Later, they reduced the daily limit to 4. The MDC relies on the daily permit for the upkeep of the fisheries. They are depending on your $3 to keep up production. They don't really care if you don't kill your limit, it works out to their benefit. It would be a hard sell to them. Why would you worry about shelling out the money to fish the park when every park has free fishable water below it. And MO has tons of other free streams that you can catch and release all of the year without even purchasing a trout stamp? In Ark., you have to purchase a stamp just to fish the trout waters. I agree with your point about bait but I like tossing small crankbaits. Should I be excluded? The question should be...Why do the catch & release people have to pay a additional fee to catch and release? It appears to me, that the catch and release crowd are the ones being excluded. They already pay a fee to fish when they buy the state license. Sounds like a great idea to me. It does open up a big can of worms though. Pun intended
timsfly Posted August 30, 2007 Author Posted August 30, 2007 I think crankbait and other lures would be fine, I just think for C&R, bait and soft plastics should be excluded. The hatcherys are at full capacity now, if we were not buying a daily tag that would just be less trout they would have to stock each night, I would think in a years time that might add up to quite a few trout they wouldn't have to raise, and maybe take the burden off the hatcheries a bit. I think if they doubled the trout stamp, or for that matter they could just sell a C&R permit, just like buying a trout stamp only it would be for C&R at the parks only, all they have to do is program the permit machines with this info and it would be there for the venders to sell. I would gladly pay 15 or 20 dollars a year for this type of permit. And if a guy wanted to keep a mess, then he could go buy the regular daily tag. As for how to get this accross to the conservation dept. they are reading this forum everyday, I know several that are out there that have told me they look at it several times a week, they will get the message. Danoinark Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 I'd go for it..that is if they didn't price me out since I live just over the border. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"

At what additional cost so some can fish on the cheap. I equate it to something like a $20 season pass that will get you into all the amusement parks in MO. How long would the doors stay open if we all did this? Yeah it is a great deal for us, but there are many hidden amenities that need our $$$ to maintain.
