Members KRflyfisher Posted January 31, 2006 Members Posted January 31, 2006 I am just dieing to nail a carp on the fly. I bought a 9wt outfit just for the opportunity. I would love to know what flies you guys find alot of success with. Brad Befus has a book and video that has some patterns that look good to me. But then again I have yet to hook up with one.
Members Big_Tony_37 Posted January 31, 2006 Members Posted January 31, 2006 I've had a lot of sucess in farmponds and small lakes with dark colored wollybuggers that have rubber legs. Cast to fish feeding on the surface. Strip them in slowly right over the fish's nose.
Members doctorbrady Posted February 1, 2006 Members Posted February 1, 2006 I just got my first taste of carp on the fly last spring. It is great fun. One day I had carp tailing in a shallow mud bottomed pond. There were tails everywhere. I felt as if I was redfishing! I was in my belly boat and would cast to the tailing fish. I experimented with flies and finally got one to take a griffiths gnat that I had weighted. A 10 pounder sipped the fly in as I watched. She certainly gave my 8wt. a work out. I am no expert on flyfishing carp, but I have been doing my research in anticipation for this coming spring. It seems that small woolies are always good. Antron bugs and similar appearing nymph patterns are probably among the top producers. In fact, I no of guys who throw nothing else. Brad Befus, who wrote the book on flyfishing for carp (literally) gives several patterns in his book. He also has a couple of carp patterns in "The Fly Shop" catalog. If you don't already get it, it has a lot of fly patterns and some good gear. Good luck. Keep us posted on how you do. Brady
Gavin Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 Occasionally I find a spot where I can sight fish to em. Mohair leaches that match the bottom color seem to do the trick. Cast way ahead, let it sink, then give it a twitch when a carp approaches. Spooky critters. This years challenge will be targeting longnose gar on the fly rod. Cheers.
