flyman Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Have a friend that doesn't know how to fly fish very well, but he still wants to come down with me to try and catch a couple browns at night. I am not as knowledgeable on spin fishing but I told him that Rapalas, Little Cleos and Roster tails would probably work. Dark colors for night. Perhaps the brown trout imitation in the Rapalas (I think I have a couple of those, but have never used them). Are those good lure choices? What else might I tell him to try? Are there specific lure models or colors you like?
fly2fish Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Gold and black, silver and black rapalas. I think F3 & F5 are the models if they are 3" and 5" floaters. Also have a some countdowns on hand too. If you plan on netting any you catch be sure and smash the barbs down or cut one of the 3 hooks off of the trebles to keep from getting tangled in the net. I am coming Thursday-Saturday and may do some spin fishing at night also depending on the water situation.
Leonard Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 F5 if the water is on.. 2 or less units.. fish up top (from outlet 1 to the cable)..or down by the boat ramp.. change your line to 6 or 8lb... F3 if the water is off.. any where... during moon light hour use something black.. when the moon isnt out (like the past few nights its been dropping behind the dam by 10pm)... using something "flashy".... when using Rapalas at night.. fish it slow w/ a little twitch... throw it out, tighten your line.. and drift.. then add a few twitches.. reel up slack and drift.... basically you just want to fish it fast enough to keep it just under the surface.. Also.. If you have a few husky jerks.. these will probably be good to.. with the bigger browns up, the bigger crank baits would do good if your after a bigger fish.. countdown.. use these if there is 3 or 4 units going.. unless you went to lose a few... I personally wouldnt send that much time with the rooster tails or cloes at night... but a black and yellow.. or something with red other options would be in low water.. Jigs. anything from 1/32- 1/125 used under a float (with a glow stick)... colors I would consider... black, olive, white, tan or combo colors (like black and yellow or olive and black)... Members Monte Ray Posted October 17, 2007 Members Posted October 17, 2007 I'm a total newbie to fishing on Taneycomo and I'm still in spinning gear mode. I've done alot of research the past few weeks for what to throw on spinning gear. Here's what I've figured out so far. Rapalas - floaters and husky jerks - from smallest to about F5 or F7. Countdowns when water is on, although I'm going to try out the smallest Countdown (1" with 1 treble hook) this weekend, water on or not. Gold, Silver, Brown trout and Rainbow trout colors. Super Dupers - I've heard great things about these, but I've yet to use them. I've picked up a couple this week and plan to try them out this weekend. Silver, Gold and rainbow colors. Rooster tails - smaller is better during the day, or so it seems. I caught a couple of browns near Fall Creek a couple of weeks ago on 1/6 oz dark colored about 10pm. I think a variety of colors and sizes are worth trying. Jigs - up to 1/16 oz. Little cleos I'd love to hear some other people chime in on this. Fishing with spinning gear does not seem to be as productive, at least compared to the fly rod users - which I plan to start this winter or next spring.
