The bloodletting associated with the heated debates was akin to the Roman circuses of 'Lions vs. the Christians'. The 'Global Warmers' 'won' and the crawfishing within academia and scientific circles was wonderful to behold as the 'losers' scrambled to get on the 'right' bandwagon. So IMO the only proper course for the uncommitted independent mind is to not put all your eggs in one basket. Maintaining an open mind and a modicum of conservative distrust of fixed positions and closed argument might well put one ahead of the game. Er----Cardiac? Members silas Posted November 3, 2007 Members Posted November 3, 2007 I hope I wasn't doing wrong but ever since I saw that PETA add I've been clicking on it like mad thinking they had to pay Phil Lilly every time I did. Is that right?
Chief Grey Bear Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 I myself am still kinda on the fence on this issue. I have the hope that it is not happening and that we are just going through a period of unusually warmer summers and winters. But also in the back of my mind common sense tells me that we have to be warming the plant to some degree. I think of all the acres of asphalt and concrete that have been laid in the world, all of the brick and concrete buildings and houses, all of the vehicles, all of the factories, all of these generate heat. Then don't forget all of the people on this earth now. We all run just under a 100*. We have all drove out of the city or town into the country in a summer evening and felt a great difference in temp. If you think of how many towns and cities there are...... It just seems natural to me that this world would have to warm up to some degree. I can't say with any certainty that the world is gaining in temp. It does feel that way as compared to the days of my youth though. For those that mentioned it, I also raise my glass (or in my case can) of quality AB KOB product. Bill Anderson Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 I had extensive dealing with the PETA people beginning 25 or so years ago while I was a television news reporter. They began as a well meaning group dedicated to eliminating cruelty to dogs, cats, and other pets. But they quickly were taken over by the extremist nut element, vegen interests who want to eliminate ALL uses of animals by humans. Now that nut extremist element totally controls all the animal rights groups these days. If they feel ignored, they get upset and are capable of extreme vandalism and violence to force their views on other people. These whacko groups have to be watched closely because of their extremists views on ALL animal subjects. One of their latest campaigns is that "fish have feelings" and they consider even flyfishing catch and release as "cruel" to the fish. Just be aware of these nuts and watch your back. I had a run in once with a group in a shopping mall that was protesting against wearing fur and leather by people. They had been throwing red paint on old ladies wearing fur coats. I happened to have on a brown leather jacket that day, and when I got near, I heard one punk say he was going to throw paint on me. I stopped, and asked him if I might have a word with him....he walked over to me and I whispered in his ear,"You throw that paint on me, and I'll blow your 'blanking' brains out, understand?". The guy got wild eyed, and backed away from me. I just calmly turned around and walked away. I guess he got my message. I whispered it to him so I could not be arrested for threatening him, since there was no one else who could hear me besides him. Like I said, they are a nut group that is capable of anything...be careful. I have a friend, a Jewish carpenter, whom you should get to know. If you do, your life will never be the same.
flyman Posted November 4, 2007 Author Posted November 4, 2007 I hope I wasn't doing wrong but ever since I saw that PETA add I've been clicking on it like mad thinking they had to pay Phil Lilly every time I did. Is that right? Well, sort of, they don't pay Lilley directly. Here is how it works - Those ads you see that say "Ads by Google" are organizations who pay Google a per click amount to have their sites featured on random websites based on what they are willing to pay and keywords they choose. The organizations that have ads on this forum probably chose 'fishing', 'Branson', etc. How often they appear depends on how much they are willing to spend. When a website owner, like Lilly, joins the Adsense program, they put a little code on their website which then scans the site and displays random ads based on the content. Every time you click on an ad here, Lilly receives a small payment, and because it's a pay per click ad, the organization has to pay for the clicks it receives. Every click costs the organization, depending on the keyword it could be anything from a penny to several dollars (or more) per click. Most of the time, in my experience, it's around 0.50 - 1.00 per click. The payment Lilly receives depends on several factors such as site traffic and how many ads where clicked. You can make good money of you have a good amount of traffic and have the ads positioned strategically so people click them. Bill - What a scary bunch of individuals. I think if they ever tried to directly interfere with anglers, they would have some serious problems. Most anglers are very passionate about the sport. It's not just a coat, it's what some of us live for.
Bill Anderson Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 I guess the best advice is to keep up with the latest "nut" news so you know what they are up to, and watch your backside. The day I have to treat as an equal a finny critter with a pea-sized brain is the day I have MY head examined. But these nut-extremists are capable of violence, and have burned down some research labs and businesses around the country over the years. I knew years ago from my news media contact with some PETA members that eventually they would get around to anti-flyfishing. These whacko vegens that dominate PETA and other groups today are really a far-left bunch and are capable of hurting people in the name of "animal rights". So while we might find them laughable, we really need to keep ourselves informed and to be on our guard. I have a friend, a Jewish carpenter, whom you should get to know. If you do, your life will never be the same.
