Chief Grey Bear Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Late in the day Sunday my son and I hit Hickory Creek for a little C&R R&R. We started about 1:00 and fished until 3:00 or so. We got a total of 2 rainbows, 1 brown and one of the largest Goggleyes that I have seen. That is also the first brown trout I have caught in Hickory. It was also a male. As I was removing the hook, he was squirting love potion #9 everywhere. chub minnow Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 Wow, I've never even seen a brown in Hickory much less caught one. Is the MDC stocking these? Are other people stocking this creek? I'm always full of questions. Just curious by nature, I guess.
ollie Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 Normally the Neosho Hatchery does the stocking, but the state could have done it this time. I know down on Capps that the hatchery normally stocks there, but sometimes the state does also. That's straight from the manager at the hatchery. "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!
mhall02 Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 Perhaps he went down Capps, into Shoal and eventually up into Hickory? Humm....

chub minnow Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 Nope I drive a yellow FJ, you can't miss it. As far as a brown making it from Capps, I don't see him surviving all of the bridges and wastewater in between. Have you ever counted the number of chicken houses on Shoal? Now then, how did that golden trout get in there a couple years ago? I think someone is messing with us.
Chief Grey Bear Posted November 9, 2007 Author Posted November 9, 2007 Well, yer gonna have ta help me out here. I draw a blank at FJ. Are you positively sure they are not stocked in there? I have always been under the assumption that they are. Otherwise I wouldn't think they would have a length limit on them. It sounds as if you doubt my catch. chub minnow Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 Not doubting your catch, I just thought they only stocked rainbows in Hickory. I don't know where I got this idea other than I thought they usually stocked browns in streams that had potential for natural reproduction. I don't think that little stretch of Hickory fits that description, but again, maybe I'm wrong. The ride is a yellow Toyota FJ Cruiser.
Buzz Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 I'm not sure if they actually stock very many brown trout in Hickory Creek, but I think the signs all over the creek say something about the length limit for them. There may be a certain amount that are put in accidentally. I've never seen one before and I've been fishing there for over twenty years, but I believe they are in there. As far as the Golden Rainbow Trout from a couple of years ago, I was the lucky guy that caught him. I still don't know how he got in there and how nobody saw that crazy looking fish in that little hole. I fished Capp's Sunday and caught 10 Brown's and 5 Rainbows. Got some nice pics of the browns. Some not much more than 6 in. long. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
