taxidermist Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Mildminner, maybe if you did not lead such a sheltered life yu would have seen the article on KY3 news about the copperheads at Pyatt, there has also been an article in the Harrison Daily Times a few years back. I found a link but it was dead. Maybe if you are in such a fuss to prove me wrong check those sources and the AGFC for some information. Chuck Miller owns the place in Marion County. Professor Stanley E. Trauth is researching the snake gahering, its happened more than once. There minner, thats your leads no prove me wrong!!!
gonefishin Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I've been told repeatedly that snakes won't hurt you......problem with snakes is they sneak up on me and make me hurt myself. I would rather be fishin'. "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." Benjamin Franklin, 1759
Trav Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Too funny gf. I have been there a few times. Haha Back in '83 I was night fishing and one fell in my boat out of a tree. Unloaded a 38 revolver in the bottom of my boat. Messed up thing about it, was just a harmless tree snake. I still laugh at myself to this day for that. Daddy Carp Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Yep! Probably would have done the same Trav. Me and "ole slim" just don't get along. I'm too slow to identify poisonous/non-poisonous so as a precaution, I kill it if it's in reach or near the house. Farther than that, it's safe (for now). My daughter say's that's bad cause they kill rodents.....and I remind her if I run out, I'll buy more DECON! Decon won't kill me or make me limp for 6 weeks. LOL
Trav Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Here Mr. Snakey, boy do I have the "Hoe" for you. Wink I actually like snakes, In a cage! Had a friend who had lots of pet venimous snakes. Including a momba. I just have enough respect for them to put them out of thier misery sooner than later. I have been bit 4 times. One cottonmouth, one rattlesnake and two copperheads. 2 out of the four on the torso. Not fun. Another thing I cant stand is flying stingers, of any species. I was attacked by african bees trying to get a lure out of a tree back in 92 while I was in Panama. Got stung 28 times before I could get the boat started. Haha DC, (INSERT JOKE HERE) I know you got one coming. Was pretty funny the way I was swatting bees and jerking the pull string of the cheap rental motor I was using. I thought for sure I was a dead man. Haha and yes I was crying. Those little shits like to sting in the same spot. Something about pheromones. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
taxidermist Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 I worked for a man who had really poor skills once, he wasvery interested with snakes as long as they were in the terrariums. We even got to the point of keeping her in a back room in a bucket when we tod him this, just in case he did drop by. One of the other workers and I figured out to keep him away so we could get work done, was to tell him Leona was out and we could not find her. She was a very disturbed Western Diamond back, he would try to bite anything that got near her cage. I do know it is possible to walk on water, I have done that a couple times after stepping on a cottonmouth on Crooked Creek, even been able to take the air step. Thats the step where you are placing say your right foot and have made the wieght transfer to the righht foot and somehow you magicly find a step rightthere in mid air.
jdmidwest Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Interesting story taxidermist. In college, I used to have several exotic pets in the dorm room including snakes. Several others on the floor had the same interests. One weekend I collected a prairie king snake while out at the farm. He was very docile and easy to handle, he took to pinkie mice quickly. Feeding time was a group activity, everyone like to watch except for one. One weekend I returned to the dorm and tried to handle the snake and he bit me and was very aggressive. Come to find out a football player friend of my roommate was scared of snakes and had been shaking him and the cage over the weekend. I took him out of the cage and placed him under the sink in a jar. Tim came around later and asked where the snake was. I told him how he was too mean to handle so I let him go in his room.. He stayed in another room till someone finally told him it was under the sink in the jar. Later that night, I caught Tim going into the bathroom. I let him get settled in, opened the door, turned out the lights and announced "Snakes Loose" and rattled the jar on the floor. We all laughed as he exited the bathroom with his pants around his ankles. Amazing the fear someone can have over a 12" kingsnake...... jay bird Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 I work in hand rehab and have seen 6 snake bites in the last 10 years. Three of them have been cotton mouths, one copper head, one timber, and one pygmy rattler. All of them where bad, but the worst had to be the pygmy which was down by Roaring River State Park.
