As a 30 year resident on Taneycomo I can appreciate anything local and fishing oriented. I hope I may be able to give some useful information in the future. I live on the lower part of Taneycomo and fish it 4 to 6 days a week. (No boast). Primarily for Bass but when the conditions (and my appetite) are right I do like the trout as well. I find trout fishing a bit too easy…. Sort of like bluegill fishing to me. (My kids loved it when they were little) So it is probably no surprise the majority of my trout fishing is Trophy hunting brownies or catching a quick limit of bows for the dinner table. I am a Bass man. Living on a trout lake. So if the Bass are being stubborn it is easy to switch gears to brownies since you have to use similar baits and tactics. My biggest brownie ever caught was in 03 and she was a whopping 14 pounds. My biggest Como Bass was this past summer at almost 7 but that is nothing to the 18-pound peacock I caught on Lake Gatun in 93 or the two 11’s I caught at Guerrero in 06 and Fork last March.

I also get on Tablerock (the Rock) regularly with my biggest being only 5 but it was a smallmouth so there you go. Also fish Norfolk a couple times a year and have fished Bullshoals and Beaver a few times in the past. My family says I have gills I am on the water so much. I have also done dozens tourneys in the past and even was a fishing guide for 8 years.

Well, my “Hello” has turned into a resume. Haha, I guess I have no trouble tooting my own horn. I have no problem sharing tactics either so I will post my exploits if you’re interested. Just keep an eye out.

I wouldnt say I have a honey hole. Somedays I can cover 4 miles of shoreline. I am a run-and-gunner type fisherman. Always moving and my trolling battery feels it too...haha. I only have 2 rules when it comes to Taneycomo. Never fish above Roark and never fish on the weekends. I have a thing about elbow to elbow fishing and sharing shorelines. I cant stand it. And when the traffic gets so bad my boat never stops rocking I call it a day. People dont have any respect anymore. When I was a kid my Gramps and my Dad taught me to slow my wake when passing fisherman and up until 10 or 15 years ago it was common knowledge. Nowadays its a mindset that people think they own the lake. It gets frustrating. Of course in my day kids respected thier elders too.......go figure

Hello all.. I've been a frequent visitor to this site and have gotten a lot of very valuable information on here.. as much as I used to Bass fish from my boat and fish strip pits from my float tube,, I can say that my new passion is trout on a fly.. There's still a lot I need to learn,, but thats the fun.. I come to this site every day when I get home from work and now that I did register, I might even have a few things to post once in a while.. When I visit Taneycomo I always stay at Lilley's Landing and can remember when I just would stop there and get warm before my final leg up to the dam.. I used to stay at Brills rainbow resort down around main street way back then.. and maybe I'm wrong but it seems the lake is making a comeback to the glory days of the early 80's... I look forward to learning and meeting some of you on here.. Phil and the rest of you.. Thanks for all you do..

Don’t get me wrong, even though I prefer Bass, I still do plenty of Trout fishing. I do after all live on a world class trout lake. The reality of Taneycomo is that at any given time the majority of the trout "that bite" have been stocked within the last year or less. Making them easy to catch and generally under the slot limit.

Living on the lower part of the lake, that is where I fish. It is a lot more productive to use spinning tackle that to use a fly rod. Not to mention, I am primarily a trophy hunter seeking mainly big brownies, which tend to be in deep cover and contours of the channel bed. Nine out of ten I have caught between 15 and 25 feet deep. In my quest I still tend to catch more bows than brownies but with the larger tackle I utilize, they are almost always over 15 inches. More than a third are over 20 inches.

I do own a fly rod. Haven’t used it since 94, fishing for bonefish in Panama. Before that I used to fish the rockies, the black hills and the smokies from time to time. My most memorable fly fishing trip was a trip to the Wind River in Wyoming. I felt like the last human alive. So secluded. But the fish at those places never compared to the size of fish I could catch right here at home.

Another thing, there isn’t a decent place to fly fish in the Ozarks where it doesn’t have the potential and reputation of standing next to 20 other guys while I am doing it. Guess I am kind of selfish or call me anti-social, but I don’t like to share. I like my own unapproachable space. Haha. Some guys like that stuff. More power to you. I fish by two simple rules while on Taneycomo. Never fish above roark and never fish the weekends. Kind of assures that my lure don’t (accidently-on-purpose) hit someone.Haha
