Members SD bass hunter Posted December 11, 2007 Members Posted December 11, 2007 I am currently a salesman at basspro shops in Louisville Ky. I lived in Springfield for about 6 months. This is where I a friendly guy who worked at a guide/bait shop in kimberling city (sorry I forgot the baitshop's name) teach me how to use my electronics. I currently had a Lowrance and was always a fan of it. But now I am getting ready to buy new graphs. I am looking between the hummingbird 787 c2 and lowrance lx-520 series. I love the lowrance's graph, but I dislike how it prefers its own software making it slow to read navionics maps. the hummingbird does not do this. I am reading what the preferences are between these two units. And if people can see the fish and their dropshot rig with the 787. Thanks for your advice.
Dutch Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 You friendly guy must have been Jerry Snider. He owns the bait shop and guides. I am running the 520 and like it a lot. If you want to talk to a really knowledgeable guy about electronics, call Marine Repair Center in Spfld. and talk to George he sells all makes. 1-417-833-9191
Trav Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 Hummingbird vs Lowrance...it's like PC vs Mac. Both have advantages and disadvantages but in the end its what your more compatible with. I have been using hummingbird all my life. My brother trys a new thing every couple years. Unlike my brother I prefer to study the fish, not user manuals. I am pretty simple though. All i need is depth, temp, PH, and contour. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
Fishing Buddy Don House Posted December 11, 2007 Fishing Buddy Posted December 11, 2007 SD Bass Hunter, Yes you can!!! I have used the 787 for drop shotting and spooning and just about everything else you can think of and it works very well.. Matter of fact here are some pictures from the Black and White Version and the color version.. This the the color version of the 787C2... A school of Spotted Bass in 71 feet of water, suspended in 35 feet.. This the the Older 787 Black and white at 100 plus feet, suspended in 35 feet again, bet you can figure out what depth these fish like to hang out in on Table Rock!! So Yes you can see fish with these Humminbird units.. I have owned both companies units, But I Like the Humminbird Units better because of support from the company, Humminbird really takes care of their end users with support and updates as needed, they are always improving the software that runs them and of course all updates are free. Plus there are alot more web sites out there put up by end users just like you and I so we can ask questions and get help from people who use these units all of the time. This is my 5 generation of Humminbird units worked with them all, now I ordering my new 1157c and 1197c units for my new boat. I spend alot of time working with clients just to teach them this type of fishing.. It's alot of fun but it takes some time to get used to fishing like this. Once you find the sweet spot on your transducer cone and get used to getting it there everytime, it is a breeze with all type of units Lowrance or Humminbird.. Just like Trav said Chevy vers Ford which ever you feel best with.. I'm just a good old Chevy (Humminbird) man myself.. You get a chance there are alot of really good guides down here about 15 or more as a matter of fact that can show you all of the tricks to this type of fishing. Hire one for a full day trip in the Summer or Fall tell them this is what you want to learn. It's well worth the money.. By the way the place in Kimberling City is called Ozarks Bait ad Tackle Jerry Snider is the owner.. Good Fishing and Good Luck and your selection of choice.. Merry Christmas Everyone.. Capt. Members DeadHead Posted December 12, 2007 Members Posted December 12, 2007 Capt. Don, What do you think of the side scan technology and do you use it very much on TR?
Fishing Buddy Don House Posted December 12, 2007 Fishing Buddy Posted December 12, 2007 Dead Head, man what I can say without becoming a advertisement, Yes it really works very well!!! I can use the SI technology to find fish that most don't even see or know about.. Example, fishing deep docks in the summer, I can see the fish suspended on dock cables by driving by the front of the docks, I can also see the fish right under the floats on the sides of the docks and on in the front of the docks, and then go back and fish, it saves alot of time. Here are some pictures to look at first is the Hwy 13 Bridge (old one underwater) This one is a brush pile on a long point on Table Rock with fish suspended around it. And Last a big water dock with cables visible, look for all of the little white dots around the cables and the stalls of the dock, see if you can pick out everything. Deep Trees are so much easier to find and explore they really stand out even more with fish in the middle of them, brush piles well I got in a little trouble two years ago by finding some of the other guides brush piles on the lake "oops", they really stand out, and with the GPS marking capability I can drive by these piles and be 100 feet away and just move my curser over to the pile on my screen and mark it, really that simple. Then drop the t-motor and check them out. Once you get the hang of what you are seeing man it opens up a whole new world of fishing.. And a whole lot more!! Expensive YES, but worth every penny! Fishing Buddy Don House Posted December 6, 2008 Fishing Buddy Posted December 6, 2008 Anyone have any thoughts on: Garmin 535s vs. Humminbird 787c2i NVB Combo vs. Lowrence 522 iGPS Trolling. here are the specs for the Humminbird Unit.. Match these to your other units.. Humminbird is way out in the front on these type units.. Retail cost is 850.00, but you can find it cheaper on line.. I take it that you are wanting verical 2-d style fishing requirments?? I have used this unit and it is very nice for the money. Easy to read and understand, plus tons of help on line and with support. Now for a little more you can aslo have the Side Imaging on this unit.. It is called the 797c2SI NVB... The Garmin is a nice but really not that good for the money, but next in line I would look at the Lorwance models.. Maybe one of the guys on here can give you more information on the Lorwance Unit.. bassman1308 Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 SD bass hunter:: I've had a 797 Si on my console for well over a year and recently purchased a 787 c2 for the TM. I've owned nothing but lowrence most of my life but the SI technology really got me interested in the Hummingbird. I also wanted something on the TM for drop shoting / vertical fishing. Don House recommended the 787 c2 to me. I bought the unit from george & his son at Marine Repair in Springfield, MO. It does everything Don said it would plus it's easy to use and has the same buttons/settings as the 797 SI. Been catching my fish on jigs recently so I haven't vertical fished much to learn the fine points but that will come. Don't remember if I ever thanked Don House for his time answering my questions but his help was appreciated very much.
