Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted December 11, 2007 Root Admin Posted December 11, 2007 IDAHO FALLS, December 1st, 2007 – RIO Products proudly announces the introduction of a brand new type of tippet material for the ultimate in all round performance. The new Extreme Tippet is a super sensitive tippet material with zero stretch and an unbelievable strength to diameter ratio. Extreme Tippet is actually a black, 100% braided Dyneema® which is a super strong polyethylene fiber that offers maximum strength combined with minimum weight. It is up to 15 times stronger than quality steel and up to 40% stronger than aramid fibers. Dyneema® floats on water and is extremely durable and resistant to moisture, UV light and chemicals. With the no-stretch properties of Extreme Tippet, bite detection increases significantly and setting the hook when striking is instantaneous. This allows for a far greater hook up rate than is usual. When fishing with techniques that rely on feeling the take - such as nymphing, swinging a fly for anadromous fish or fishing streamers – Extreme Tippet is the perfect choice for the fly fisher. One huge added advantage of Extreme Tippet is the strength to diameter ratio. With a strength of 10lbs (4.5 kgs) for a 5X diameter (0.006" 0,152 mm) it is more than twice as strong as the average material of this diameter and gives the angler all the advantages of this increased strength. The other sizes available are 15lbs (6.8 kgs) at 4X (0.007" 0,178 mm), 20lbs (9 kgs) at 3X (0.008" 0,203 mm) and 25lbs (11.4 kgs) at 2X (0.009" 0,229 mm). RIO recommends using the 5X for nymphing (especially for Czech nymphing), 4X for fishing hoppers and terrestrials, 3X for streamers and 2X for anadromous fish. This new Extreme Tippet is available from all authorized RIO dealers and has a recommended retail price of $8.95 for a 20 yard spool. The Caddis Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 Very interesting, any comments on visibility in water? Is it more or less transparent than floro?
flyfishmaster Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 I found this info on Rio web site about the line. Look at their knot recommendations... --- Extreme Tippet is very, very strong and has a slick coating that can result in the failure of standard fishing knots. To get the very best in performance from Extreme Tippet we recommend the use of a triple or quadruple surgeon's knot when joining together two pieces of Extreme Tippet (or if joining it to regular nylon). We also recommend the no-slip knot for attaching flies (an illustration is attached with each spool). Warning: The ultra-thin diameter and very high tensile strength of Extreme Tippet makes it tough to break (and cut). Be careful if hooked to a snag that the fly or line does not fire back into your face when pulling for a break. Also, handle with care when tightening knots to avoid being cut by the material. ---- Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
Luke Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 It's kind of strange that it floats on water, but they recommend it for Czech nymphing. Black is also an odd choice for color. I'm looking forward to putting some of this next to some other braided line like Spiderwire and see how it compares. --Luke
Paola Cat Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 Sounds like a "fireline" tippet to me. I'm assuming that it's very visible in the water and that you'd want to some fluoro to it. Very interesting. PC Cheers. PC
Members Steve Dally Posted December 11, 2007 Members Posted December 11, 2007 Report I posted on another website When I heard about Rio 10lb 5x tippet my immediate reaction was cool and "do they make a 6x" given its necessity on the White River system, due to fishing pressure/water clarity. Then I had the letdown its black floats and the smallest diameter is a 5x. It took me a while to get the courage to fish it after getting a sample in Denver. Wasn't confident in it holding in a triple surgeons, kinda waxy slippery surface, so used 2 Eugene Bends and a tippet ring. (Anyone else got a better join?) Ive heard about using 2 unis. The Eugene bend does work. Seems pretty limp. Used its once in high flows heavy nymph, caught a lot of fish, and low low water not as many fish. Jury still out but my initial gut reaction of "ohno" wasn't right. I didn't notice the low stretch so much, probably given the amount of stretch/give still present in the system with leader line 5wt rod etc. Apart from possibly once on a serious fish in fast water histicking on a short line, when I pulled the hook, maybe too heavy handed. At this point _ worth testing, given the high breaking strain per diameter if you have big fish. Will it spook them, apparently its black because it can't be clear.
