Kyle Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Heard a rumor that the smallmouth migrate up in to the park in the winter for the warmer water. Anyone know anything about this? or have any pointers if it is true? Looking at going down this weekend or maybe tuesday. I got a "Orvis Battenkill III" for Christmas and dying to try it out. Also, got the extra spool with sink tip fly line and don't really know how to use it (for trout or smallies), so any advice there would be greatly appreciated. KYLE
Seth Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Yep, they are in there and some dandies at that. I have seen quite a few pushing 20" I'd bet pulled out of there during the C&R season. I've yet to catch any, but usually the guys catching them are throwing single hooked rapalas or streamers.
Members rollcast Posted January 4, 2008 Members Posted January 4, 2008 saw a guy catch one last sunday. had a jiggin outfit with a white rooster tail and he dead sticked it on the bottom then slowly jigged it and then wham!!! he hit it. it was pretty neat to watch
Members jrbhc8 Posted January 4, 2008 Members Posted January 4, 2008 You can almost always find some smallies in the park year round. You just have to look for them. Another prime spot is at the end of the park where the spring branch meets the Maramec river. The water condition is perfect for smallmouth. I have never caught any in the park, but I have found a few at the cardiac and suicide access. jrbhc8 www.troutchapters.com jrbhc8 ~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~ | <°)))>< | <°)))>< | | ¿ >°)))><

Danoinark Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 Kyle, use your sink tip to get your fly down in the deep pools. The key though is to use a short leader. I would use straight mono of no longer than 4 feet tied to the sinking fly line. Match the size of mono to the fly. The old standard is divide the fly size by 4 to get the appropriate tippet. So if its a size 16, then 4x an above is the standard. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
