Trav Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 I need to get a new prop for a 61 evinrude fastwin 18 horse and have found a few places online to pick one up. My dilemma is how to get the optimun performance out of my old salad tosser. I understand the factors of size and pitch, but what I cant seem to figure out is how I go about determining what is best. Since nobody will take a prop back if I order the wrong one, I definatley want to make sure I know what I get is what I need. I am sure there is an OAF member out there that can explain some kind of math that I can use in coming to a decision. I dont think my current prop has enough pitch for it barely has enough thrust to get it into a plane without 50 pounds of gear on the nose, so I definately need to change something from the status quo. Believe it or not, this old bird has never needed to buy a prop for any of the motors I have had in the past. I guess you can call me fortunate. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Chief Grey Bear Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 The time that Dad got an SS prop for a Merc, the marina hooked a RPM gauge to the motor and sent us out. We tried several props until the correct RPM's for the motor was achieved at certain throttle settings. That would be the only correct way of doing it that I know of. Daddy Carp Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 TRAV, I have delt with these guys several times on props. They are about the best going. They worked with me on getting the right prop for a 50 merc. and will take back if not damaged. They are : Midwest Propellar in Olathe, Ks. their email address is: bob@midwestpropeller.com Their web site is: www.midwestpropeller.com/Contact.html These guys were very helpful and avg. priced. There is a prop shop in Ozark, Mo. called "Hot Props" also. John is the guys name. I don't know about take-backs with him, but he is good. He does a lot for rnbwhvn. & duck harbor. If you can get the pitch numper stamped on your prop, you are half way home! If you open the throttle fast, and the motor revs high but the boat is slow to plane.......increase the pitch 1 number & try. If the boat is to slow to plane or won't, decrease the pitch (14p to 13p etc.) Rule of thumb is for every 1 degree of pitch change, it will increase or decrease motor top-RPM by 300-400 rpms. If you only need a little more speed, You can have youre prop "cupped" which will increase the pitch effect 1/2 a degree. Am I clear as Truman Lake? Any questions, PM me.
stone9-7=2 Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 Hey Trav, a buddy of mine couldnt get his boat to come down on plain unless somebody got in the front of it. I asked him when was the last time he pulled the plug on it,as it sat outside. Well low & behold it was full of rain water. Problem solved. Im sure you have checked that, but thought i would throw it out there just for the heck of it. Dyna-Prop does a great job also.

taxidermist Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 Hey go hit Dyna Prop. They rebuilt a prop for me last fall. took all of four days and was only $55.00 you could not tell it had any damage after they fixed in and it was pretty sad. Just head to Branson west go north on 13 to 76 and west there down 76 about 4 miles on theleft. Hey go hit Dyna Prop. Trav Posted January 20, 2008 Author Posted January 20, 2008 Thanx guys I talked with a guy named Jack, at Central Marine in Hollister. One of his specialties is vintage marine. He has done routine work on my dino so is familiar with it. He claims to have a bunch of old props that should fit so is gonna let me borrow a few to see wich pitch is right. I know the one I have on isnt right. Knew it when I bought it. Just to busy/lazy to do anything about it. Now the slot where the pin sets in is so worn that I bust pins on a weekly bases. Kind of forced to deal with it now...haha, tired of hanging over the back of the boat. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
