gonefishin Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 I'm still trying to figure out how they turned a pontoon boat over.!.!.! Must have been a really small pontoon or a really really huge load of trees. But then it could have been a rogue wave or perhaps the giant squid got em. I dont know what happened but it has been my experience that a person would really have to work at it to turn over a pontoon boat. Sheezzz. I would rather be fishin'. zander Posted January 20, 2008 Author Posted January 20, 2008 My friend's dad in junior high managed to do it. The boat was called "The African Queen" and they were trucking through the swamp portion of Kincaid Lake in Louisiana. My friend and his sister were upfront. Sister yells "STUMP!" My friend thought she yelled to jump, so he goes off the side, it hits a submerged cypress stump and down she went. The African Queen II had a longer life, but it does happen, albeit unusual.
Trav Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 I seen it done on an episode of a cop show that patrolled the party coves at Lake Mead. The pontoon had a partydeck on top of it and the crazy drunks got her top heavy with too many people. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted January 21, 2008 Root Admin Posted January 21, 2008 I bet it was Bass Pro's new pontoon made just for planting trees so I also bet it's pretty big- and new. So I'm sure there wasn't any funny business (although I know you guys are just kidding). Pontoons are just like any other boat. They tip pretty easy really. Several summers ago, we were out on a small 20 footer we used to have. Had a couple of big people in the front heading upstream when I stopped the engine (hit the brakes). The bow buried itself sending the stern way up in the air. Pretty scary... and funny after it was all over. I hope their pontoon was salvageable. This is the time of year they put in alot of trees.
taxidermist Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 Wow, wish it had been videoed. Many eyars bad, Ft Riley MWR had boats for rent out on one of the local lakes. We rented a large deck boat, it was very underpowered a 50HP on a boat rated for 120 I think it was. Anyway the wind came up and we were acorss the lake, had life jackets on the kids. as we crossed the lake headed for saftey of the marina I tried to keep the motor trimmed and the nose up, a huge wave came over the front and washed everything off the rear to include the kids, I grabbed one as they floated by, Ray grabbed one. As the weight of the water hit the rear of the beck boat the nose stood up even higher and it was just seconds until the the boat was half under water nose up. It only takes a second for all this to happen. Wiith those trees maybe the load shifted or as they were dropping trees who knows what. As long as noone was hurt everything else can be replaced.
Members DeadHead Posted January 21, 2008 Members Posted January 21, 2008 Rumors are floating around that a periscope was sighted shortly after the sinking....
Crappie5 Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 What part of the lake were they on. The paper said Jakes, is this Jakes up in Kings River?
Fishhand Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 I think Jakes is between Poverty Point and Emerald Point. If you go over Table Rock Dam on 165/265 heading East, go past the State Park, and when 165/265 starts to get very curvy, you are on the West side of Jakes. I think Jakes Cove is where the Argonaut development is beginning to take place...
bassman1308 Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 Try to get a mental picture of this... Several yrs ago a couple friends of mine, very bright and succesful busniessmen I might add, loaded a large cedar tree on the front of a borrowed pontoon boat with the top of the tree hanging over the front of the boat and the trunk toward the center of the boat. As they backed off the bank to sink it in the lake, the tree trunk started to tilt upward. Of course, the man not running the mtr jumped on the tree trunk trying to hold it down. That didn't help. The tree trunk kept going up with him on it. The extra weight on the front of the boat caused the back of the boat to raise up completely out of the water. ( mtrs get very loud that way they said). The only thing that was in their favor was the wind eventually pushed them back to the bank and they were able to get thinks under control and nothing was hurt. That would of make a great video.
