hoglaw Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 I'm looking for a portable sonar unit that I can put on my canoe or bass buddy. I've looked around on ebay a little, and there's a wide range of cheap non-name stuff, and lots of hummingbird portable units. Has anyone used one of these? I fish a local impound that doesn't allow motors, and the lake is tough. I've been on groups of monsters before, but have been skunked quite a few times as well. The lake is very deep, and there's no contour information available anywhere. I know where a few tops and humps are from dragging worms, but I want to get a better idea of the contours and underwater structure. I like the idea of a suction cup transducer, but a floating one would work fine for my purposes as well. I don't really care about fish finding ability (though I presume any double beam that contours well will show fish just as effectively). Anyone have any pointers?
hoglaw Posted January 24, 2008 Author Posted January 24, 2008 Would it be easy to switch out from the canoe to the bass buddy? I'll primarily want it on the latter because it's the easiest to get around the lake with, and it picks up less wind than a canoe with just me in it.
jdmidwest Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 I bought the Eagle 242 Portable a few weeks back. 8 AA batteries, suction cup mount transducer. I can move it from jon boat to yak to inflatable with no hassles. I was not looking for highend electronics, just something to give depth and bottom structure. If it finds fish it will be handy too. Hummingbird makes one also. I was going with the Bottomline, but the trolling motor type mount would not work in some of my watercrafts. taxidermist Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 I have an older Eagle, uses two six volt batteries. Works very good about like the 100.00 Humminbirds. My son lols says everytime its makes a sound we catch fish. I keep it with the hopes of going back to Canada someday. Get a name brand!!
