Greg Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 I agree with the others - this is a great thread. I've enjoyed the other members lists. Here's mine in the order I generally fish them: 1. Green or olive zebra midge # 18 or 20 2. Green mohair leech size #10 or 12 3. Tan scud size #16 or 18 4. Olive or brown #16 or 18 soft hackle If we are talking at night though I like a #8 maroon or purple mohair leech as my #1. Michael at BCO taught me how to tie a "spun" mohair leech a couple of years ago and it's been the best fly by far that I've used at night. But in the daytime a mohair leech of the old carded mohair yarn in more muted colors (like olive or brown)seems to work better for me for some reason. Thom Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 greg: what color on the sigment wrap on the green or olive midge? Thom Harvengt
Greg Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 Copper is my favorite. I like gold second best then silver. Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
JobyKSU Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 Well, since I primarily fish Beaver my go-to flies are a bit different. 1. - Ruby midge #18 - Been killer this year 2. - Soft hackle #14 - Either a partridge and green or a beaded thorax with green 3. - Parachute emerger #18 (olive) 4. - Griffeth's gnat #16-20 I guess I stick with the flies that worked for me elsewhere, and then tie on a scud ::. Flysmallie Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 Duane I took a look at a slump buster the other day...I bet its a night time catching fool..and I would say if there were any smallies feeding, they would hit that in a second. Dano Oh yeah Dano, those smallies like them. A rust color with a bright orange or yellow body.
vanven Posted January 26, 2008 Author Posted January 26, 2008 GREAT STARTER TOPIC JEROD. THANKS. Jerod: Do you tie the pine weighted or un weighted? I dont tie my own yet and I swore I would never get started, but I am starting to catch myself browsing the tieing forums now. I generally fish the pine unweighted, but i spend most of my time with it between outlet 1 and rebar where the water is shallow anyway. -Jerod

vanven Posted January 26, 2008 Author Posted January 26, 2008 There are 2 flies that I love the most and they are the Slump Buster Black, olive ,and white. Then we go to the Mohair leech I have 13 colors that I love, all have there use and they are Palymate Special, Blood Red, Mottled Leech , Ace of Spade,Spankin Spinach,Watermelon Candy, Electric Blue, Evil Leprichon, Crystal Ice, Margriatia, Jungle Juice, Plum Crazy and Just Plain Black I have had the opportunity to thumb through Michael's Mohair box and also had the opportunity to fish one of his Ace of Spades mohairs. That may be the best fly I have ever fished. The box was impressive, I actually had to go buy one the next day. I have only been to the shop once and didnt see the Ace of Spades in stock. I would love to get my hands on a few. -Jerod
