Paola Cat Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 Fished for 5 hours today. Started out in the Zone 2 riffles. The water's got a green tinge to it and really looks good. It was an unbelievably slow start. Struggled to bring 4 to hand on red zebra midges. Switched to a Y2K and moved up just below the stone arch bridge. Brought 5 or 6 to hand and helped a fellow angler take a picture and measure a nice 22" rainbow he had just caught. Broke off a fish losing the Y2K. Moved up just below the dam and took another 5 or 6 on a peach egg pattern. A nice 20"+ fish came up and engulfed my strike indicator. That about freaked me out. I need to learn to tie a strike indicator pattern! It started to get too crowded so I moved to Zone 3. Started about half way down and walked all the way down to the river. Consistently caught fish on the peach egg in any slack or pocket water area. Brought about 10 to hand. Walked back to the truck, ate a sandwich, gave the back a break, and then tied on olive mohair leech. Fished the same Zone 3 water and caught 4 smallmouth and one of RC's famous chubs on the leech .... no trout. Used the new Launch today ... pretty happy with it. Nice day, big crowd. PC Cheers. PC
DoveTail Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 I can't wait to get down there. With the warmer weather I would imagine the crowds will get bigger.
timsfly Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Thanks for the report, I think I'll head that way tomorrow morning. Tim Homesley 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville, Mo 65625 Roaring River State park Tim's Fly Shop www.missouritrout.com/timsflyshop
rcguy Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 PC, You sure had good weather if it was anything like it was here in KC. I'm itching to go back but time is rumming out. Feb 11th is the last for Cand R I guess. I've tied plenty of peach eggs to try and flor. yellow with some red on it. Sounds like you did well today! Gotta meet you down there sometime and follow you around! You did better than I did. I'll give you a couple of Chub cracklebacks! Jerry
Paola Cat Posted January 28, 2008 Author Posted January 28, 2008 RC .... sure no problem .... I think my C&R season is about over. I've got to go to India for work and will miss the weekends of the 2/9 and 2/16 (would like to fish the river). Since I'm leaving on 2/9, the wife's got a list of stuff for me to do on 2/2-2/3. I might try to sneek down on 2/4. Also, I might be in for a river trip on the 2/23. Once the "regular" season starts, I'll switch my routine to going on weekdays. Could probably work something out then. The weather was much better than the last time you were down. Man that had to be cold. PC Cheers. PC
patfish Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Thanks for the update. Oh how I miss BSSP.... I must visit her again.... soon!
timsfly Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Bennett sure fished good today, very windy but the fish were hungry, I caught 32 and the wind was just to much for me, about 1:00 I decided to leave, didn't catch anything of size, had one rainbow about 17" it weighed 2 1/2 pounds. Caught most on a apricot egg #16, caugth a few on a brown beetle up on top and caught a few on various nymphs, I only fished from the dam down to about 100 yds downstream of the bridge, there were plenty of fish in there. There were a lot of fish down by the hatchery outlet, but I think everybody else was there also, but there were a lot of nice fish hanging out there. Paola Cat Posted January 29, 2008 Author Posted January 29, 2008 Hey Tim ... great report. Your report validates the C&R season at Bennett for me. A slow day has been around 20 ... a good day, you lose count. Glad the fish were hitting for you. The egg patterns have been hot. I've been fishing peachy king ... your apricot is pretty close. Pretty sweet stretch of water you fished isn't it? Below the stone arch bridge until you get to the slower water is pretty nice. There are some giants in there ... I've got taken into the backing twice during the C&R. The hatchery outlet is pretty popular and I seldom get down that far. I usually skip it completly and go on down to Zone 3. How long of a drive is that for you? PC Cheers. PC
