Members Bassmandan Posted January 28, 2008 Members Posted January 28, 2008 I have to admit, I don't own a football jig and only have limited knowledge on this presentation. I am planning on picking up a few and I have a good idea of what to get, but I wanted to see if anyone has any advice. I read on this site to stick with 5/8 oz and 3/4 oz models. Any other suggestions regarding weight, color, and where and how to present football jigs? What about rod and line preferences? I'm also a little confused about what grubs to use as trailers. Do people use the "skirted double tail grubs" even though the jig itself already has a skirt? Members carolina-rig-01 Posted January 28, 2008 Members Posted January 28, 2008 i will throw anything from 1/2 oz. to a 3/4 oz depending on water depth, wind, and how i am trying to present the bait. for line i personally like seaguar invizx flouro, but retie often. for colors, on table rock i don't think you can ever go wrong with pb&j, brown and purple flash, and missouri craw. try other colors and you will find your own favorites though. trailers depend on a lot of things but i like twin tailed grubs (never used hula grubs for a trailer but they might work), and baby brush hogs. when the water is cold like it is now, a pork frog is a good choice for a trailer too. for presentation, well some days you will need to hop it on the bottom, some days rip it off the bottom, some days drag it real slow. some days fast and some days painfully slow just experiment. sometimes the bite is a tap-tap, sometimes it's nothing more than your bait feeling lighter or heavier than normal. just remember hooksets are free! If you can read this thank a teacher. And since it is english thank a soldier!
Members Bassmandan Posted January 29, 2008 Author Members Posted January 29, 2008 I had read on a thread that someone suggested using jewel hyperflex grubs for football jig trailers. I'm pretty sure those are skirted unless I'm mistaken. Thats why I mentioned skirted grubs. WebFreeman Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 I think a lot of people use football heads on hula grubs or chompers. I read something once about using heavy (1/2 to 1 oz) heads and just dragging them back. Supposedly the football shape makes it kind of walk back and forth. “Many go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” — Henry David Thoreau Visit my web site @ webfreeman.com for information on freelance web design.
Members carolina-rig-01 Posted January 31, 2008 Members Posted January 31, 2008 yeah, i do use football heads on my hula grubs. If you can read this thank a teacher. And since it is english thank a soldier!
Dutch Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 My primary jig head is a football. I use it mostly in brown but sometimes other color combinations. I use 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, and 3/4 oz depending on the depth of the fish and the amount of wind. They aren't necessarily any better than any other jig head. They just come through rocks a bit better than some others. If I am fishing timber I'd rather have an Arke jig.
