cpriest Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 I am thinking about bringing two girls Im watching over the weekend up to RR. They both know how to cast and have done plenty of bream fishing on some old zebcos of mine. What would be the best single point barbless lures to use out there? I have some micro jigs, would they be able to use those under an indicator and get a decent drift? How would the casting be? Any help would be great since ive only fly fished there. Also, the girls are 11 & 13, at what age do they need a MO fishing license? -Chase
Steve Smith Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 The girls would need a trout stamp if they fish during the C&R season. Note that catch and release ends next Monday 2/11. Then catch and keep starts March 1st, and a daily tag is required, but a trout stamp is not required. Stamps are required by everyone only during the C&R season in Roaring River. The spin casters would be fine if you tie on a short section of two pound test so not to spook the fish. Pick up some egg patterns - peach and cheese colored to start. Get a bottle of Gink Floatant and some spit shot. Give the eggs a good dose of floatant and place a split shot about six to eight inches above the egg. The idea here is to sight fish the egg patterns, and you want the fly to float ABOVE the spit shot just off the bottom. Have the girls watch the eggs, and when they disappear, set the hook. Tim's fly shop can help with the flys. He probably has some other techniques just as effective. ___________________________ AKA Flysmith - Cassville MO
OKFlyFisher44 Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 When the g/f goes to R.R. I always rig her up with 2 lb Maxima and then use several different techniques... The glo-ball below an indicator works great. I've even tied on bead-head san juan worms and buggers to fish below an indicator and had good success. Also thread jigs in black/green, white, orange, and orange/white have worked well for her in the past as well....all fished under an indicator. On the thread jigs and buggers....I've also had her fish at the head of a run in the fast water and just "holding" the jig/fly in the current. She's almost had the rod pulled outta her hands before.... They should do well... Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
Don Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 Tie a very small double barrel swivel to the end of the mono. Use a large clear float with a rubberband inside that you twist to hold. Place the float above the small swivel. Put the foat on before you tie on the swivel. Drop a very small olive marabou jig, a bead head egg, or a small olive wooly worm with small split shot 1 foot above on a 6X or 7x flurocarbon tippet below the swivel. Fish the fly near the bottom. It worked well for my kids in the fly area a few years ago. Good Luck.....Don Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
Flysmallie Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 The girls would need a trout stamp if they fish during the C&R season. Well then I think I have been breaking the law. Wait a minute, I think my daughters have been breaking the law. I have taken both my 9 & 14 year old down there without a trout stamp. I always assumed that if they didn't need a license then they didn't need the trout stamp.
timsfly Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Glo-balls, san juan worms, small jigs, black/yellow, olive, and white are good colors fished under small floats will do the trick. Fish up by the hatchery in the afternoon and in the morning, when the fish in the hatchery are being fed, feed trickles into the river and a brown glo-ball will catch fish very eaisly, this can be very productive. Yes everybody of any age if they are fishing during the C&R season needs the trout stamp. Good luck.
