Kayser Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Just finished building my first rod- an 8.5', 5 piece, 5wt rod (the Stowaway-5 from Cabelas.) Mainly got it for close-up nymphing and streamers. The only problem is that I don't have a decent line to couple it with. I really like the SA Mastery Distance GPX (I think) that came with a barely used 4wt. I mostly fish the upper Current, so there are a lot of mid-range casts. Just looking to see if there is a better choice for this rod before I go off and spend the money. Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.

Danoinark Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 I sure like Rio lines....Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
duckydoty Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 I'll have to second the Rio lines. duckydoty A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
timsfly Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 For up close and personal nymphing I like a DT-5-F cortland lazers are my favorite for this, or a Triangle Taper Lee Wulff line is hard to beat. On a rod of that length a WF would be best, but the Wulff lines are sure nice, and easy to cast at any distance. Paola Cat Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 I like the SA Mastery "Trout" DT-5-F. Works great. Great for roll casts and fishing with an indicator. I also like the RIO lines. PC Cheers. PC
Kayser Posted February 6, 2008 Author Posted February 6, 2008 Thanks for all the info- I'll have to check out a bunch of those. Gonna try to get it before a trip to Montauk this week. Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
drew03cmc Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 I have an Orvis Generation3 Wonderline WF5F on my Avid 5wt. I love it! Andy
3wt Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 RIO RIO RIO I won't buy a line product not made by Rio. Best line, best leader, best tippet. Well worth the money. I recommend Rio Grand over SA GPX. I've had both and the Rio is noticably superior. Not to knock Orvis, but I have heard bad things about their longevity, or lack thereof. I've only had the Grand for a year, so I can't say that it lasts forever, but I expect to get several seasons out of it.
