Members Mark Smith Posted September 4, 2011 Members Posted September 4, 2011 I picked up a new Heddon 310 in the box with catalog and all. Never used. I think it was out of the box to get line on it and that's all. Also got a Heddon Pal Mk II rod in the tube with the plastic still on the cork. I flyfish, so I know I have something very cool but just how cool is it? I don't want to hold on to something someone else will seriously appreciate. Is it something truly collectable or is it something I hold onto for the coolness factor? Any information is appreciatted.
laker67 Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 Don't know alot about them but I have owned and used several of the 300, 310, and the 320's. They were a very popular fly reel in the 70's. They were one of the few that you could modify the click drag to be quiet and work smoothly. I used them up until the time that SA came out with a comparable click dog reel. Like the old systems reels, each size was designated for a certain size fly line. As in system 4 was for a 4 weight fly line with backing. A very good and dependable reel in it's day. I still have at least one, of each size of the Heddon's. Of course mine are well used as compared to the one you described. But I can tell you for a fact, they are almost impossible to wear out. I would think they would be a good collectable.

rps Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Very cool find. I do not know anything about the value, but if you decide to fish with the rod, do not be surprised if the finish crazes or even flakes. Varnish finishes are not intended to last forever, and if it has an epoxy finish, it is one from the very early days of that invention. BTW - I especially like the fact the cork still has the plastic wrap and the cork itself is two colors because of that.
Idylwilde Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Don't know about the rod & reel but I do know how much trouble it would be around the house if I set Ice Tea on the table without a coaster and left water marks. LOL Take a Child Fishing they are the future of the sport.
drew03cmc Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 That is probably about $150 worth of rod and reel as it sits now. Those reels are on ebay all the time in NIB condition. Those rods are common enough that you don't have an insane amount of money there. Fish the hell out of it and enjoy the slower pace of fiberglass. What length and line weight is the rod? Andy
Members Mark Smith Posted September 9, 2011 Author Members Posted September 9, 2011 I think I'll keep it, and, luckely I'm not married so I don't have to worry about the destruction rained upon me for not using a coaster. I'd be a dead man. Time to refinish. Thanks about the comment about crackling. I don't think I'll use them. Cool to have in the racks though.. Thanks all.
Gavin Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 Nice find...if you have an ebay account you can search old auctions for an idea of value...Both the rod & reel are pretty common items so not much value there. Fish the heck out of it.
