I'm fully aware that there are other sources of info for water conditions at Bennett. I just find it makes me irritated that they intentionally post on Thursday the water conditions of Tuesday. They don't want to hurt any business that they may get. Dishonesty at its simplest level. Seriously, how long does it take to post that report?? I know it don't take 2 days. I watched the previous owners do it when I was there one day. Yeah maybe I'm just getting old and cranky too. Honesty goes very far in this world. Credibility also is questionable after stuff like that too. The previous owners would even do a bulletin if things changed on short notice. I guess I shouldn't complain about a free service. But then again..........

Well I just looked at a report for Bennett spring online. It is dated 4/11. How or why do they put info for Tuesdays conditions?? Maybe trying to keep from people being steered away?? Nahh. That couldn't be. I understand that it is a service but come on. Quit trying to BS people. That is just dishonest. There are a ton of people that use that report as their only source of info for fishing conditions. Without knowledge of other rescources. Sorry, just had to rant.

Well if I was doing something I wasn't supposed to it was a long way from Bennett. I'm still at Hoover Dam. I am packing up and heading home though. So you may just see me there next week sometime. I have stealth fishing gear so then again you may not see me.
-
Don't worry Pat, I'll be home next weekend and I'll get down for a few nights and days in the pop-up. I've got a little less than 2 weeks before heading out to NC for more DAM work. I gotta do some searching around for a travel trailer while I'm back too. If I can't find what I want then maybe even buy something down that way and haul it back home. Cya

No need to apologize. It's hard to see that little note up there.
-
Yeah, I saw it and returned a PM to you. Rich

Yes I still have it back in St. louis MO. I'm at work in NV and will be back home next weekend. If interested give me a PM with more inf if you are interested.

Take hiway J out of Perry toward the dam. Turn on BB and you can get to good cove fishing going left or right. You have to walk a little through the woods but it is worth it. Both directions off of BB will get you to the water. Turning left is paved and ends at a boat ramp that is small and you could probably fish within site of the ramp in a small boat and do real well. Turning right is a gravel road and has a lot at the end that you can park in and walk to the lake from. Crossing over Lick creek on J is bridge and an access area that a lot of people fish from also.

Yes Wayne, those are desert bighorn sheep. I think it's the most expensive tag you can buy in the US to hunt for. We see them all the time going up and down the road that leads down to the power house. I'm amazed at how they traverse the terrain there.

NoLuck has been packin enough around Hoover Dam the last couple months, but if you want I can get a wheelchair and roll you off in the stream. LOL

I have fished a few times when it was almost that empty for a few hours. Middle of the week early May of all times. Pretty rare to say the least. Just think in about 4 days what it will look like.

I still fish a brassie once in a while. Flo orange always seems to pick up some fish sometimes when they just want something different. My dad used to fish a lot of brassies when I was young. He would always fish the middle hole between the dam and the bridge hole. Now it just looks like one continuous hole somewhat. From what I remember of possum bugs though was that they were about a size 14 hook. Maybe I should get a few tied up this year to give them a whirl.
-
Wayne, We used to fish what we called a possum bug. I have not seen them anywhere since I started back trout fishing about 8 years ago. They really seemed to do the trick. Also we fished an army worm and a few others that always produced fish. I'm sure it would be a simple tie if I knew what to tie up with. Dubbing with grey possum fur or dyed olive fur of some sort I believe. Maybe even use lead wire under the fur to give it some depth. We always fished it with a split shot back then so I'm sure they were not weighted. Best I can tell is it resembled a scud back when I had no idea what a scud even was.

Brian we are talking about fixing existing hooks that they already have. Otherwise just use the 2499spbl like I mentioned. I would never buy a hook that I had to modify other than pinching down the barb.
-
No ,you twist the hook so that the point is off centerline of the shank of the hook.Essentially opening the gap somewhat. The problem with most small hooks is with a bead on it, it basically closes that much of the hook gap with the bead. The 2499 spbl eliminates this problem for the most part. I think I use a 5/64th bead on my #18 hooks. If you can get a smaller one on it would be worth trying. Faster water the 5/64 works good as long as you mend properly. Slower water would probably be better if you can get the smaller bead on.

Something to consider is the type of hooks you are using for your midges. If you are buying them from the shops around Bennett or most other fly shops, they are too small of a hook gap for my likings. If that is what you are doing then take a pair of pliers and twist the hook to open the to open the gap a little. That will help your hookup percentage somewhat. If you are tying your own use a 2499spbl hook. You can thank me later!! You will never use another hook again. It is a barbless hook but it holds fish good and they are super sharp. Something else is bead choice. Use the smallest bead for the hook you can. It keeps the hook gap more open too.
-
Thats why I say use the smallest indicator that floats the fly. If it does anything other than float down stream naturally set the hook.
-
Midges, midges, and more midges. Size 18 and 20. Various colors with various TBH colors.Use the lightest tippet and the smallest indicator to float the midge. Normally use flouro in 6x or 7x in super clear water. Get the best possible drift you can get and fish where the fish are.

Jerry, I'm at Hoover Dam now till the end of March or so. After that I may have a short stretch at home before heading out to NC again. I wish I could plan better and be able to do stuff like that. My job is a little crazy so here lately I can't plan too much. I did make a point of it to my boss that I want off the last couple of weeks in Oct. and the first couple weeks in Nov. I have missed the last 2 bow seasons and it's driving me bonkers. Trout fishing is pretty good but I still like my deer hunting. Maybe if I ever get an extended break we can do that. At least work at home for a few months would be cool.

Jerry just think if you lived in St.Louis. 2 of the best flyshops I've seen yet. Talk about trying to not spend money.

Ever Wonder What It Looks Like At 81 Feet In The Spring?
NoLuck replied to rcguy's topic in Bennett Springs State Park
Jerry I believe that piece of rope is what's left of a rope that used to be the boundary to how far you were allowed to go in. People were there diving when my brother and I went down the Sunday before the new year. As low as the flow was it should be easier to dive I would think. -
Not sure that a date has been set yet. I'm sure historically it falls on the same weekend though. Probably look it up on MDC website .
-
I'll text you Pat.

You'll have to hook up with the famous inventor some day Jerry. He is a handsome young fella that fishes with a bamboo rod and pretty much fishes dry flys exclusively. Or better yet you probably need to have me point him out to you. I'm sure he will be happy to show you or give you one of his signature flies.
-
Jerry, I'll do that for sure. I sure missed getting to see you at the campground this past August. Next year will be different. I'm looking at buying a travel trailer ,so if I do you are welcome to stay with me and my brother. It all depends on how things go in the next few months at work in Vegas. Hopefully I can buy what I want without a big payment and put it on a permanant spot down at Bennett in one of the private owned campgrounds. I've got my fingers crossed that I will have some time to use it and see some of you and the guys down there more next year.
