Good looking fish. Hey, you weren't in that group of kayaks that left Baptist Friday afternoon/night, were you? Rob
  4. Fished down from Baptist last Friday afternoon, and I had to work at the isolation bit of it. Saw about 12 cars, had 8 people come back upstream as I was putting in, and then a couple people low hole me as I started. And when I say low holed, I mean they fished a drift until their fly was straight out from me, and then took a few steps around, casted again, and kept moving. Gave the river 20-30 minutes to rest. Had another couple guys come back upstream. I think it's gonna be crowded til the cold scares everyone else off. I can't wait for November. And if at all possible, please use the trail when coming back up so as not to spook fish for those wanting to fish downstream. It's easier walking, as well. Plus, you just might stumble upon some wild edibles if you're looking. Rob
  5. Hey, technically speaking, mine was a limit, too. 1 fish/day, 18"+. Got it sight-fishing a #18 softhackle on 2lb tippet. I just chose not to keep it. Still, I'd love to get into the whites like that- that's a nice mess of fish.
  6. I guess somebody has to be first. 18in Brown, Current River, Friday.
  7. He was in a car accident last night, ejected from the car as it rolled, and was taken to the Overland Park Regional Med Center ICU. They induced a coma and placed him on a respirator, and I'm currently sitting in the ICU waiting room for the CAT scan results. Just praying that he makes it, but also that he isn't paralyzed if he does. Rob
  8. That last pic of the fish in the net- that's a nice smallie in there, and it looks like an absolute pig of a brown. Remember what the sizes were on those fish? Rob
  9. Yep, made it to classes just fine. Wednesday night was rough- hit the bar at midnight, and friends felt the need to buy me shots. But the HW was done, class was attended, and I learned to avoid shots with hot sauce in them. Along with things that are named anything similar to "Demon Spawn." Rob
  10. For my birthday yesterday, I decided it had been too long since I had been trout fishing. With the cooler weather and limited time, I decided it was time to his the LP again with a friend. Parked at Lane Spring around 4:30 and proceeded to fish downstream. Picked up fish while nymphing, mainly on large headheads and some fish on mohairs. Big fish was around 15", but saw bigger. Afterwards, local bar in Rolla to celebrate being 21. Chalk up another fantastic birthday. Rob
  11. Spot, bucketmouth- who cares? Looks like dinner to me. Rob
  12. How about just putting the GM atlantics into the great lakes? There are very few natives left in them due to overfishing long ago, along with introduction of other non-natives (smelt, onchorynchus species, carp, etc.) This would be the best option- fairly isolated from the Eastern US where the native populations are, and could interact with other non-native salmons already there. This is in no way like grafting apple trees, or even cross breeding- this is a process somewhat like a chemical reaction used to actually add DNA to the genome of the organism (lengthen chromosomes). Who knows what effect this will have on backfeed and gene regulation, although since they have already produced fish, it doesn't seem to have much of one. And this could never happen through selective breeding, either- the fish are just too different (salmo of the Atlantics, onchorynchus of the chinooks.) The food issue is not very concerning to the general public, but the possible ecological repercussions to cute or fun animals are huge. This is how society works. Example- nobody gets up in arms about farmers killing off native flora to plant their GM mutant strain of hyper-resistant corn or soybean. And they don't have a problem eating it, either. They might just be ignorant to these facts, but I doubt it. And for Christ's sake- don't take your scientific knowledge from movies. Please. It harms society and the advancement of technology. Plus it's usually wrong. And who likes being wrong? Rob
  13. Hey, if anybody picks up these tickets, look for Delta Sigma Phi fraternity selling in the concession stands- it's our annual fundraiser that weekend. I won't be there, but a lot of guys will, and we would appreciate the business. Rob P.S.- We salt the ice on our beer to make it colder.
  14. I dunno, but I would love to see it on the website! I only fished Zone 2, but I really hope they got a picture. People were a lot friendlier than I had anticipated, though. Maybe it was because the crowd had already gone away for the weekend by the time I hit the water. Rob
  15. No outrage, just disbelief followed by respect that I actually followed through with it. My friends never believed me when I said I was gonna get one. But it is VERY popular- making new friends left and right. The wind has become a problem, because it blows the line into the hair! But beyond that, it's all good. No tattoos or piercings- those are a little too permanent. And I like being able to work around high magnetic fields on campus- that's where the fun toys are. Rob
  16. Norm, by those standards, I would have to agree that this is pretty tame. But it does draw lots of odd looks and even more compliments from random strangers. So, now for the long awaited pictures. There is a before (from July) and an after (today at Bennett). Sorry for the poor quality, friend took it with a phone. And it is blue with red tips, I was just in the shade and the color doesn't show up that well... Rob
  17. So glad I posted this- every single post has made this worth it. Outside Bend- It really didn't scare off the fish. Hit the Current Sat, and caught 58, except no big fish! The only big brown I had hooked came unpinned, and the others kept getting foul-hooked. Maybe they were eating my split shot... Oh well, there's still a couple more weeks to get that picture. Hell, maybe I'll get a nice one at Bennett today. Not a big Current brown, but still trout. That's a little out there, even for me. But I bet she was fun for a while, though. Rob
  18. 1- If I came looking for your daughters, my girlfriend would beat you to it with the shotgun. 2- I'll be on the Current River tomorrow. 3- Sorry for the long reply, had a lot of homework this week. Rob P.S.- It's now blue, with red tips.
  19. If you see somebody with a 7" mohawk fishing the Current River, Mill or Spring Creek, or really anywhere within an hour of Rolla, please, don't reach for the gun! Say hello, I swear I'm friendly. Should also be sporting green Cabela's waders and a gray Watermark chestpack if I'm trout fishing. Always looking for faces to put with names on the forum. Rob
  20. Two types of antibiotics- bacteriocidal and bacteriostatic. One kills, the other stops the growth/reproduction, allowing the immune system to catch up and take care of the infeciton itself. Penicillin is an example of the latter. Rob
  21. I got one of those $30 kits from Cabela's for Christmas when I was 13 (8 years ago), and it's the only vice I use. It's worked great for me over the years, there is just a slight learning curve for it. The half-hitch tools and hackle pliers are other tools that I absolutely love. I totaled up everything I have, including that kit, new scissors/bobbin, and all of my materials, then divided it by the # of flies I have tied. In that 8 year period, it came out to about .30 per fly. I've since lost most of those, but I've also caught a lot of bass, bluegill, and trout on them, and enjoyed every single fish. I'll never get back those countless hours at the vice, tying for trips, fun, and even a couple competitions, but personally, I think I'd spend the time tying more flies. Also, being a hunter helps with some material expenses. Squirrel tails, rabbit hides, and wood duck flank, mainly. Have a friend that gave me some pheasant tails (and a skin), and a local farmer that gave me about 200 peacock feathers for $5. Still need to find a use for the barred wood duck flank, though. Also, don't take up hunting to help with fly-tying, that's something you will definitely never come out ahead on. But if you already do it, start looking at your take for the day as potential flies. Rob
  22. Second the Bo's Hollow BBQ- it's good stuff. It's also a Model T ranch, with a fair amount of vehicles from that era (12, I think). Good place to take kids if you have them with you. Rob
  23. I would PM one of the admins about it.
  24. Gavin- I almost died when I saw that last pic. You missed a bunch of meat up by the head! Doesn't mean I wouldn't fish with you, though. Especially if you have PBR Rob
  25. I have caught several rainbows out of the current that I would call wild fish. They have no scarring on their noses or fins, all of the fins are pointed, and not damaged or gnarled, and the colors are spectacular. Fins are red/pink with white tips. Not to mention they pull a lot harder than the hatchery fish. Also, I managed a 4" rainbow and a 3" brown (yes, measured, and yes, I can tell the difference) from a riffle below Baptist Camp. I'm not quite sure about the brown, but I'm pretty sure the rainbow may have been stream born. As far as the brown, there is a VERY low survival of eggs in Ozark spring-fed streams. I think it was like 1% in hatchery trials. But that's from egg to fry, not to fingerling. So by those numbers, it's not impossible for a brown to be stream-born, but I would compare it to winning the lottery. Ten times. Rob
